Cubs sweep Reds for first time since '09
Sep 18, 2014 - 5:29 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Hendricks pitched seven innings of one- run ball to guide the Chicago Cubs to a 3-1 win over the struggling Cincinnati Reds.Hendricks (7-2) has been one of the best rookies in the majors this season, and Wednesday was no different for the young right-hander. He struck out four and didn't walk a batter, helping the Cubs sweep Cincinnati for the first time since 2009.
"I came in just trying to learn and see what big league hitters and big league baseball overall is all about," Hendricks said. "I definitely learned a ton the second half of the year and was able to have success too."
Luis Valbuena, Chris Valaika and Ryan Kalish all drove in runs in the triumph.
Yorman Rodriguez and Tucker Barnhart had two hits apiece for the Reds, who had their entire starting lineup replaced from Tuesday after they were shutout for a second straight game.
"It does matter that the guys played hard," said Reds manager Bryan Price. "Those young guys were out there busting their tail."
Daniel Corcino (0-1) picked up his first major-league decision after giving up two runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.
Kris Negron's leadoff double in the top of the first led to Cincinnati's first run since the ninth inning of Sunday's loss to Milwaukee. Ramon Santiago advanced him with a bunt and Rodriguez made it 1-0 with his RBI groundout to shortstop.
The Cubs responded in their second at-bat, with Jorge Soler drawing a walk to get things started. With runners on the corners and one out, Valaika singled to left and Kalish hit a ground-rule double to center to make it 2-1.
Javier Baez led off the eighth with a single against Jumbo Diaz and was replaced at first base when Anthony Rizzo grounded into a fielder's choice. Soler walked and Valbuena gave Hector Rondon some breathing room with an RBI single to left-center.
Rondon pitched around a one-out walk to record his 25th save.
