A's hang on in 9th to beat White Sox
May 13, 2014 - 6:31 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Donaldson hit a two-run homer, Jesse Chavez pitched into the ninth inning and the Oakland Athletics held on for a 5-4 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday to open a three-game series.Jose Abreu's MLB-leading 14th home run knocked Chavez out of the game with no outs in the ninth inning and sparked a three-run rally that came one hit shy of tying the game for Chicago.
With Alexei Ramirez on second base, Sean Doolittle struck out Tyler Flowers and Leury Garcia to end the game and earn his second save of the season.
Jed Lowrie added a two-run double for the A's, who have won a season-high five straight games. Chavez (3-1) struck out seven and gave up two runs on five hits and two walks in his eight-plus innings.
White Sox starter John Danks (3-3) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks in six innings, striking out five.
Dayan Viciedo also hit a solo homer for the White Sox, who have lost three in a row and four of their last five.
"It wasn't a lack of trying. Sometimes you hit it and it's right at people," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said.
Abreu cracked an 0-2 pitch the other way over the right-field wall leading off the ninth inning and A's manager Bob Melvin pulled Chavez for Fernando Abad.
The ball was barely over the wall when Melvin walked onto the field.
"He just left the pitch out to Abreu," Melvin said. "We had Abad for the second hitter if (Chavez) did give up a hit."
Abad walked Adam Dunn and was replaced by Jim Johnson, who gave up a double to Dayan Viciedo and an RBI single to Ramirez before Doolittle came on. The last Chicago run scored on Paul Konerko's sacrifice fly and Ramirez stole second base before the last two strikeouts.
Josh Reddick had a two-out triple in the second inning to knock in Oakland's first run and Danks retired seven of the next eight batters before Reddick drew a leadoff walk in the fifth.
Danks struck out the next two batters before Donaldson turned on a 2-0 pitch and knocked it into the left-field seats for his eighth homer of the season and a 3-1 A's lead.
Lowrie's two-run double to the gap in left-center off reliever Daniel Webb in the seventh pushed Oakland's advantage to 5-1.
Earlier, Viciedo went the other way with a 2-1 pitch for his homer to right field in the second, his third of the season. Reddick's game-tying triple went off the top of the center-field wall in the bottom of the inning.
