Dunn's blast powers White Sox past Astros
May 17, 2014 - 6:35 AM Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Dunn went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning that highlighted the Chicago White Sox' 7- 2 victory over the Houston Astros to open a three-game series. After mustering just 12 runs total while dropping four of five entering Friday's matchup, Chicago scored four times against Houston starter Collin McHugh in the sixth and tacked on three more in the eighth to help Jose Quintana pick up his first win since April 8.
Conor Gillaspie added a pair of hits, including a two-run double, with Tyler Flowers and Gordon Beckham each contributing RBI singles for the White Sox.
Quintana (2-3), hung with three losses and three no-decisions over his previous six outings, allowed two runs and fanned five in five innings of work.
"Getting (Quintana) this win was big," Dunn said. "It seemed like every single game he pitched we couldn't get it going offensively."
McHugh (2-2) struck out seven and gave up just three hits in 5 1/3 innings, but was hurt by four walks in addition to Dunn's blast.
He had held the White Sox to one hit while in control throughout the first five innings of play, but stumbled in the sixth as Chicago erased a 2-0 deficit.
McHugh walked Gillaspie and hit Jose Abreu before falling behind to Dunn, who drilled a belt-high fastball on a 2-0 count into the seats in right to snap an 0-for-11 stretch.
"I didn't have very good command all night," McHugh said. "It came back to bite me in the (sixth)."
Dayan Viciedo followed with a long double to end McHugh's evening, with Flowers increasing the lead to 4-2 with a two-out single off Josh Zeid.
Houston had stranded five baserunners against Quintana over the first four innings prior to breaking through with a pair of runs in the fifth.
Jonathan Villar and Jose Altuve singled to open the Astros' half of the frame and each advanced a base on a fielding error by Viciedo in left field. A grounder off the bat of George Springer brought in the game's initial run, and Jason Castro plated the second with a two-out opposite-field hit.
Houston generated little against the bullpen combo of Jake Petricka, Zach Putnam, Ronald Belisario and Frank Francisco, however, and Chicago put the game out of reach with three unearned runs in the eighth.
A throwing error from Villar at shortstop helped set up Beckham's two-out RBI single that put Chicago up by a 5-2 count, right before Gillaspie ripped a double to right that knocked in the final two runs.
Game Notes
The Astros fell to 1-17 this season when failing to hit a home run ... Houston's Dexter Fowler drew a pair of walks for the fifth time in his last six games ... Altuve finished 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to eight games ... White Sox ace Chris Sale fanned 11 over four scoreless innings in a rehab assignment for Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.
