Dunn, Rienzo help White Sox drop Royals
May 21, 2014 - 5:56 AM Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Dunn homered and drove in three to help the Chicago White Sox to another 7-6 win over the Kansas City Royals in the second matchup of a three-game set.The White Sox erased a five-run deficit on Monday in the opener en route to a 7-6 victory.
Chicago has won three straight over the Royals and remained perfect in Andre Rienzo's last seven appearances on the hill.
Rienzo (4-0) earned the win after striking out eight over six innings, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks.
"The offense has been awesome all year," said Rienzo. "The team made it happen. It's not about me, it's all about the team."
Tyler Flowers also homered for the White Sox, while Gordon Beckham and Dayan Viciedo contributed an RBI apiece in the win.
Alex Gordon and Danny Valencia each knocked in two for Kansas City, which saw starter Yordano Ventura (2-4) take the loss after surrendering four runs on seven hits over six innings.
The Royals trailed 7-2 entering the home half of the eighth when they made a comeback of their own to make the game interesting in the final stages.
Eric Hosmer doubled to lead off the eighth and Billy Butler followed with a walk.
Hosmer and Butler each moved up a base on a passed ball by Flowers and Gordon knocked in Hosmer with a groundout to cut.
Lorenzo Cain then singled in Butler and later scored on a wild pitch by Frank Francisco to make it a 7-5 game.
Ronald Belisario entered in the ninth to close it out for the visitors and ran into some trouble after getting the first two outs of the frame.
Butler smacked a double to right and Gordon followed with a single to right that cut the deficit to one.
Pinch-runner Jarrod Dyson swiped second for his sixth stolen base of the season to move into scoring position.
Belisario, however, struck out Cain to end it and record his first save of the season.
"(We) kept battling," said Royals manager Ned Yost. "That eighth inning kind of put a damper on us. We scored three in the eighth and kept battling."
Earlier, Viciedo opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first following a two-out triple from Conor Gillaspie.
Valencia's two-run double in the second staked the Royals to a 2-1 lead, but the White Sox jumped back in front in the fifth.
Flowers hit a solo shot with one out and Beckham knocked in Adam Eaton with a single later in the inning.
Beckham scored on a wild pitch from Ventura to make it 4-2.
With two men on and one out in the eighth, Dunn blasted his seventh homer of the season.
