Lynn, Cardinals beat Reds again
Apr 9, 2014 - 5:46 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Holliday smacked a go-ahead double in the sixth inning and Yadier Molina had three hits, including a solo homer to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds. The Cardinals climbed out of a 4-0 hole after 1 1/2 innings, tying the game with a four-run rally in the second inning sparked by Molina's leadoff homer.
Holliday's hit to the right-field wall in the sixth was dropped by Jay Bruce on a tough play, helping Lance Lynn pick up his second win over the Reds this season.
Lynn (2-0) allowed five runs on eight hits in six innings, striking out four and walking none. He also got the victory in a 7-6 decision over Cincinnati on April 3.
"It's hard to explain with Lance. I think some guys just have a knack of being in the right place when we've got a lot of offensive support," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said of Lynn.
The Cardinals have won the first two games of the three-game series and are 4-1 against the Reds this season.
Logan Ondrusek (0-1) replaced starter Homer Bailey to begin the sixth and took the loss. Bailey, who lost to Lynn and the Cardinals on April 3, was knocked around for nine hits and four runs in five innings. He fanned five and walked two.
Jay Bruce had two hits, including a two-run triple in a three-run first inning for the Reds, who fell to 2-6 on the season.
"Across the board, we just need to get better," Bailey said.
Peter Bourjos doubled to lead off the sixth against Ondrusek and went to third on Daniel Descalso's pinch-hit sacrifice bunt. After Matt Carpenter was hit by a pitch and Kolten Wong struck out, Holliday delivered his double to give the Cardinals a 6-5 lead.
Bourjos added an RBI single in the seventh to score Molina, who had doubled, and Randy Choate, Carlos Martinez and Trevor Rosenthal pitched the last three innings for St. Louis to seal the win. Rosenthal worked around a leadoff pinch-hit single by Brayan Pena in the ninth to record his third save of the season.
Earlier, the Reds scored three runs with one out in the first inning after Brandon Phillips doubled, Joey Votto was hit by a pitch, Bruce hit a triple to the right-center field wall and Ryan Ludwick followed with a sacrifice fly.
Billy Hamilton's RBI single in the second made it 4-0, but the Cardinals tied the game with their four-run rally in the bottom of the inning.
After Molina hit his third homer of the season into the left-field seats, Carpenter added an RBI single up the middle with two outs and Wong followed with a two-run triple into the right-field corner.
The Reds re-took the lead in the fifth when Ludwick grounded out to score a run after Votto and Bruce hit back-to-back singles.
