Votto's HR in 9th lifts Reds; Arenado's hit streak ends
May 10, 2014 - 5:54 AM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Joey Votto smacked a game-winning solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Colorado Rockies, 4-3, in the opener of a three-game set.Votto worked a 3-0 count against Boone Logan (1-1) to lead off the inning before launching his fifth blast of the season -- all against left-handed pitchers --, a towering shot off the luxury suites in straightaway center field. It was his fourth career walk-off homer.
"In a tie game, he has the green light," Reds manager Bryan Price said.
Colorado's Nolan Arenado, who went 0-for-3, had his franchise-record 28- game hitting streak broken.
He worked an eight-pitch, one-out walk after being down 0-2 in his final at- bat in the top of the ninth and then scored when Justin Morneau sliced a double into the gap in left-center to tie the game at 3-3.
Morneau, though, was stranded at second following Jordan Pacheco's fly out to left and DJ LeMahieu's groundout to second.
Jonathan Broxton (1-0) was credited with the win despite suffering his first blown save of the year. Starter Johnny Cueto struck out eight and surrendered a pair of runs on five hits and a walk over eight innings.
"We knew we had to scratch and claw. We battled every at-bat and made him earn every out," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Cueto.
Todd Frazier cracked a 485-foot solo homer for the Reds, who broke a two-game skid.
Troy Tulowitzki belted a solo shot for Colorado, which has dropped two straight on the heels of a 6-1 stretch.
The Reds plated a run in the first and second to jump out to a 2-0 lead before the Rockies pushed across a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to knot it.
Skip Schumaker led off the first with a double, advanced to third on a Brayan Pena groundout and scored on Brandon Phillips' sacrifice fly to center. Frazier's leadoff blast to center in the second gave the Reds their two-run cushion.
Tulowitzki began the fourth by cracking a leadoff shot into the Reds' bullpen, while Charlie Blackmon's RBI single in the fifth made it 2-2.
Billy Hamilton scored on Pena's sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Game Notes
The Reds have scored just 29 runs in Cueto's eight starts this year ... Carlos Gonzalez had a 10-game hitting streak snapped ... Cincy improved to 6-12 in one-run games this season ... Cueto is the first Reds pitcher to throw at least seven innings in each of his first eight starts of the season since Bucky Walters in 1941 (20 starts). Cueto is also the first Reds pitcher to toss at least eight frames in five straight appearances since Tom Browning (six starts) in 1989.
