Smith, Padres top Reds
Jul 2, 2014 - 5:41 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Seth Smith had three hits, including a solo homer, and scored three times in San Diego's 8-2 rout of the Cincinnati Reds.Carlos Quentin belted a two-run homer and drove in three, as the Padres piled up a season-high 16 hits and won their third straight contest. The total came one night after the Padres were held to one hit in a 1-0 win over the Reds.
"The bats came alive. We had good at-bats from a number of guys," Padres manager Bud Black said. "It was great."
Ian Kennedy (6-9) scattered seven hits and allowed a run over six innings to snap a three-decision skid. It's his first victory since June 4 against Pittsburgh.
"I thought the fastball tonight was his best pitch," Black said. "
Mike Leake (6-7), who had a three-start winning streak broken, surrendered a season-high 11 hits along with three runs in 5 2/3 innings. Logan Ondrusek recorded just one out while being charged with three hits and four runs -- three earned -- in the seventh inning.
Devin Mesoraco homered and Todd Frazier drove in a run for the Reds, who have lost two straight since a five-game winning streak.
"We haven't played for two games. We haven't been our best by any means," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "It wasn't a really well-played game."
Smith led off the first by hitting Leake's third pitch of the night over the wall in right field.
Kennedy helped his own cause by delivering a ground single to right field in the second to drive in Alexi Amarista.
Todd Frazier's line single to center scored Zack Cozart in the fifth, but the Padres made it 3-1 in the bottom portion when Smith scored on Chase Headley's single past a diving Brandon Phillips at second base.
The Padres piled it on in the seventh by scoring four times. Quentin homered to left with Smith aboard. Cameron Maybin's single off reliever J.J. Hoover plated Yasmani Grandal. First baseman Joey Votto then made two errors on one play, allowing Tommy Medica to come home.
Quentin's sacrifice fly scored Will Venable in the eighth before Mesoraco went deep to center in the ninth off Tim Stauffer.
The Reds loaded the bases later in the inning, and originally got within 8-3 when Frazier was ruled safe on a force play at second. The call was overturned after a challenge by the Padres showed Frazier's foot got to the base just after second baseman Irving Falu had the ball in his glove.
Game Notes
The Padres are 26-0 when leading after seven innings ... Kennedy is 3-0 with a 3.13 ERA with 23 strikeouts in his last four starts at Petco Park. He is 4-1 lifetime against the Reds ... The 11 different players with a hit for the Padres is tied for the second-most by the team in a game at Petco Park, behind only the 12 batters against Milwaukee on July 31, 2009 ... The Padres will go for the three-game sweep with Tyson Ross (6-8) on the mound Wednesday, while Johnny Cueto (8-5) starts for the Reds.
