Angels send Indians to sixth straight loss
May 1, 2014 - 4:06 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Hank Conger hit a two-run home run and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim beat the Cleveland Indians, 7-1, to complete a three-game sweep.Mike Trout and David Freese had two RBI apiece and Albert Pujols drove in a run for the Angels (14-13), who are over .500 for the first time since a 1-0 start last season.
Angels starter C.J. Wilson (4-2) hurled eight strong innings, allowing just one run on two hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.
"Mechanically, I got into a groove as the game went on," Wilson said. "We made some great defensive plays today. The best thing today was, I didn't over throw I just tried to go as deep into the game as I can."
David Murphy drove in the only run for the Indians, who have lost six in a row. Elliot Johnson had a double for Cleveland's only extra-base hit in the game.
Indians starter Zach McAllister (3-2) gave up five runs -- four earned -- on four hits while striking out five and walking four over 4 1/3 innings. McAllister had a streak of 37 homerless innings snapped by Conger in the second.
"Zach competed but it was hard for him," Indians manager Terry Francona said of his starter. "His line was worse than how he pitched."
Cleveland got on the board in the second after Murphy singled to plate Asdrubal Cabrera, who was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch prior to scoring on Murphy's two-out single to center.
The Angels responded in the bottom of the second with Conger's two-run homer. Freese walked to start the inning but was cut down at second on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Erick Aybar. Conger then went deep to right to give the Angels a 2-1 lead.
Los Angeles picked up another run in the third. Howie Kendrick hit a leadoff single and while stealing second was able to reach third on a throwing error by catcher Yan Gomes. Pujols then hit a sacrifice fly to plate Kendrick.
Freese kept the Angels rolling in the fifth, driving in two more. Trout walked and Pujols doubled, putting both runners in scoring position. Freese then knocked them in with a two-out single up the middle to give LA a 5-1 lead.
The Angles rounded out the scoring in the sixth with two more runs. Collin Cowgill was hit by a pitch and J.B. Shuck singled before Kendrick grounded into a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners. Trout then hit a two- out double, which plated Cowgill and Kendrick.
