Tigers rip Tribe behind Cabrera
Sep 2, 2014 - 4:14 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Miguel Cabrera finished 4-for-4, homered twice, scored four runs and drove in three to fuel Detroit's 12-1 decision over Cleveland in the opener of a four-game series.Tyler Collins hit a three-run shot, Victor Martinez slugged a two-run homer and J.D. Martinez added a solo blast for the Tigers, who collected 20 hits en route to posting their seventh win in their last 10 games.
David Price (13-10) scattered eight hits and walked two while allowing one run and fanning eight over seven innings.
"He's been pitching for a while now, and he knows what he's doing," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. "He's got the stuff to go with it. We had hits; it's just hard, because he's really good."
Carlos Santana knocked in the only run, while Lonnie Chisenhall and Michael Bourn added two hits each for the Indians, who lost for the second time in their last eight.
Corey Kluber (13-9) lasted just 2 2/3 frames, charged with seven hits and five runs.
Detroit jumped on top in the first as Ian Kinsler tripled and scored on Cabrera's shot to left. Cleveland halved its deficit in the home portion as Santana plated Michael Brantley with a double.
Victor and J.D. Martinez went back-to-back after Cabrera kept the Tigers' third alive with a single, and Kluber was sent to the showers down 5-1.
"Our offense did a great job against Kluber, getting two runs in the first and a couple more in the next two innings," Price said. "That made my job a little bit easier, for sure."
The visitors increased their lead in the seventh. A single, double and intentional walk loaded the bases with none out, but after Nick Castellanos struck out, Nick Hagadone allowed RBI singles to Alex Avila and Eugenio Suarez before inducing an inning-ending double play from Ezequiel Carrera.
Cabrera reached the seats in right with two outs in the eighth, and later in the frame Avila's infield hit with the bases loaded gave Detroit a 9-1 advantage.
Tyler Collins pinch-hit for Cabrera in the ninth and launched a three-run shot to center for his first major-league homer.
Game Notes
