Final/11
Blackmon, Rockies rally past Dodgers in 11 innings
Apr 26, 2014 - 6:37 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Charlie Blackmon's RBI single sparked a three-run 11th inning, lifting the Colorado Rockies to a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the opener of a three-game set.Brandon Barnes doubled off Jamey Wright (1-1) with one out in the 11th, forcing Dodgers manager Don Mattingly to turn to left-handed specialist J.P. Howell.
Blackmon stayed down on a 2-2 slider and muscled it out to center field to plate Barnes. Blackmon stole second before Nolan Arenado ripped a base hit to left to put runners at the corners.
Carlos Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Blackmon to cross home. Brandon League then came on to relieve Howell, and Troy Tulowitzki walked before Justin Morneau singled to left with the bases loaded. Arenado scored on the play before Wilin Rosario grounded into an inning-ending double play with the Rockies holding a 5-2 edge.
Rex Brothers (2-2) pitched a scoreless 10th to earn the win and LaTroy Hawkins closed it out in the 11th to secure his seventh save of the season, despite allowing a two-run homer to Adrian Gonzalez.
Tulowitzki and Corey Dickerson added solo homers earlier in the game for Colorado, which has won six of eight.
Colorado starter Jordan Lyles pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts in the no-decision.
"It's tough to win extra-inning games on the road," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "Jordan (Lyles) gave us every opportunity to win this game. He had a good two-seam and cutter and pitched to both sides of the plate. You have to make big plays to win on the road so tonight was a big one."
Yasiel Puig homered and knocked in two runs for the Dodgers, who saw starter Josh Beckett hurl eight innings and surrender two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
LA has lost four of its last five.
"Josh (Beckett) was good again," said Mattingly. "We are happy the way he's progressing. We are still continuing to have trouble scoring runs."
Puig's homer to center in the first inning gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. Tulowitzki got the run back with a solo shot to lead off the second inning.
Dickerson gave the Rockies the lead two batters later with his long drive over the wall in left-center.
Dee Gordon doubled with two outs in the third and Puig brought him home with a single in the next at-bat to tie the game at 2-2.
Later, Hanley Ramirez doubled to lead off the home half of the 11th and Gonzalez followed with a blast to right. Hawkins then got Scott Van Slyke to pop out to second base before inducing consecutive fly outs from Carl Crawford and Juan Uribe to end the contest.
Game Notes
Arenado extended his hitting streak to 15 games ... Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp was ejected by homeplate umpire Angel Hernandez in the ninth for arguing balls and strikes following a punchout ... Colorado was 3-for-6 with runners in scoring position ... LA was 2-for-7 with RISP.
