Arenado extends hit streak as Rockies pound Mets

May 3, 2014 - 6:15 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Troy Tulowitzki drove in three runs, Nolan Arenado extended his hitting streak to 22 games and the Colorado Rockies pounded the New York Mets, 10-3, at Coors Field.

Charlie Blackmon, Justin Morneau and Wilin Rosario each had two RBI for the Rockies, who have won the first two tilts in this four-game set.

Arenado singled in the seventh to match the third-longest hit streak in franchise history.

The Colorado bats backed Jorge De La Rosa (3-3). The left-hander allowed eight hits, including a two-run homer by Curtis Granderson, walked three and struck out four over six innings.

"We're playing well in most phases of the game right now, but it usually comes down to pitching well and we're doing that," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss.

New York starter Zack Wheeler (1-3) had a rough outing as he surrendered seven runs -- six earned -- on seven hits and two walks in four frames.

"Honestly, I didn't have a clue where the ball was going today," said Wheeler. "When they did hit it, they just found holes."

The Mets took a brief 1-0 lead when Juan Lagares doubled to begin the game and scored on a wild pitch.

Colorado immediately jumped on Wheeler, putting up a four-spot in the opening frame. The first five batters reached base against the right-hander. Tulowitzki singled home Blackmon, Morneau hit a run-scoring double and a Rosario swinging bunt rolled down the third-base line and stayed fair, allowing Tulowitzki to score. Corey Dickerson followed with a sacrifice fly.

Tulowitzki made it 6-1 with a two-out, two-run single in the second, and a seventh run scored on a Blackmon groundout in the fourth.

Granderson hit a line-drive smash to right field in the sixth, but the Rockies responded with a three-run seventh.

Blackmon led off with a home run to right, Morneau grounded an RBI single and Rosario capped the offense with a sac fly.

Game Notes

Lagares has hit safely in 11 straight games ... New York second baseman Daniel Murphy was caught stealing in the first, ending his streak of successful swipes at 28. The streak was the second-longest in team history ... Before the game, Colorado placed infielder Josh Rutledge on the 15-day disabled list with a viral infection and recalled infielder Ryan Wheeler from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
