De La Rosa's strong start helps Rockies down Padres
May 17, 2014 - 6:31 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jorge De La Rosa spun seven shutout innings and the Colorado Rockies defeated the San Diego Padres, 3-1, in the opener of a three-game set.De La Rosa (5-3), who took a no-hitter into the seventh, allowed one hit and a walk with five strikeouts to earn the win, which gives De La Rosa a victory in five straight starts and helped the Rockies snap a three-game skid.
"It was a great performance," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of De La Rosa.
LaTroy Hawkins allowed a run in the ninth but still managed to nail down his 10th save of the season.
Charlie Blackmon and Jordan Pacheco each drove in a run for Colorado.
San Diego starter Eric Stults (2-4) was charged with two runs -- one earned -- on six hits over 6 2/3 innings in the loss.
"It was a pitchers' duel all the way, which is a rarity (at Coors Field)," Padres manager Bud Black said.
DJ LeMahieu's double in the fifth put runners on second and third with two outs. De La Rosa then reached on a fielding error by Jedd Gyorko that allowed Pacheco to cross home and make it a 1-0 game.
Chris Denorfia ended the potential no-hitter with a leadoff triple to right in the seventh. De La Rosa, though, didn't let the hit affect him as he worked around the triple to keep the Padres scoreless after six.
Everth Cabrera followed Denorfia with a groundout to second, then Chase Headley lined out to second before Carlos Quentin popped out to third, ending the frame.
Colorado added insurance in the home half of the seventh, with Blackmon knocking in LeMahieu with a single.
Pacheco's RBI single in the eighth drove in Troy Tulowitzki to push the spread to 3-0.
Denorfia doubled to lead off the ninth, and Headley plated him two batters later with a single to center to account for the final margin.
Game Notes
The only no-hitter in Colorado's history occurred when Ubaldo Jimenez blanked the Atlanta Braves, 4-0, on April 17, 2010 ... Hideo Nomo is the only pitcher to throw a no-hitter at Coors Field. Nomo no-hit the Rockies as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers on September 17, 1996 ... San Diego committed three errors ... The Padres were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
