Rockies slug way past Padres
Jul 10, 2014 - 12:51 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Troy Tulowitzki got in some good prep work for the upcoming Home Run Derby, with the National League captain socking two of five Colorado long balls in the Rockies' 6-3 victory over the San Diego Padres.Tulowitzki's second solo blast of the day came immediately after Drew Stubbs belted a two-run shot off Joaquin Benoit (3-1) that snapped a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning. Charlie Blackmon went deep earlier for Colorado and finished 2- for-4 with a pair of runs scored, with Wilin Rosario also homering in the triumph.
The power surge, along with 4 1/3 scoreless innings of work from four Rockies relievers, enabled Colorado to earn back-to-back wins for the first time since a season-high five-game streak from June 11-15.
Boone Logan (2-1) tossed a perfect top of the eighth to notch the victory, with LaTroy Hawkins working a hitless ninth to pick up his 17th save.
San Diego put up a pair of solo homers in defeat, including the first of Jake Goebbert's major league career. Seth Smith had the other as part of a 2-for-3 performance.
Benoit entered the bottom of the eighth not having allowed a run in 19 consecutive appearances, but that streak quickly came to end when Stubbs followed a Blackmon single with an opposite-field drive over the scoreboard in right that staked the Rockies to a 5-3 advantage.
"I knew that I hit it well and wasn't sure whether it was going to catch the top of the wall or not," said Stubbs. "Luckily, it snuck out."
Tulowitzki then made it a three-run cushion by drilling his 20th homer of the year, a laser into the left-field seats.
"They got a couple fly balls on a day that [the ball] was flying," Padres manager Bud Black remarked.
Colorado wasted little time showing off its power display, as both Blackmon and Tulowitzki connected on two of San Diego starter Eric Stults' first nine pitches to build a 2-0 edge after one inning.
Goebbert cut the lead in half by hammering a Jair Jurrjens fastball into the Rockies' bullpen in the top of the fourth, though the rookie was denied a two- run homer after Colorado successfully challenged a safe call on Yasmani Grandal on a would-be double that preceded the at-bat. However, the Rockies countered on Rosario's leadoff shot in their portion of the inning.
Smith returned the favor with a no-doubter off Jurrjens to open the fifth, which came in front of singles by Chris Denorfia and Chase Headley that placed runners at the corners. Denorfia later crossed the plate when Jurrjens uncorked a wild pitch, knotting the score at 3-3.
Jurrjens lasted 4 2/3 innings, surrendering eight hits and three runs while registering six strikeouts. Stults allowed just five hits in five innings, though three of them were solo homers.
Game Notes
All nine of Colorado's runs during the three-game series came via the home run, with the team hitting seven in all. Blackmon had a two-run blast in Tuesday's 2-1 decision ... Rockies rookie first baseman Kyle Parker collected his first major league hit with a second-inning single ... Stubbs has homered nine times in his last five games at Coors Field ... Benoit last allowed a run May 11 against Miami.
