'Rocies' beat Pirates behind Matzek, home runs
Jul 27, 2014 - 3:17 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Rocies, er, Rockies crushed the Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-1, on Saturday in the middle installment of a three-game series. On a night when they misspelled Troy Tulowitzki's name on the back of giveaway jerseys, the Rockies managed to win their third straight game despite their star shortstop being on the disabled list.
Tulowitzki, whose name was missing a 't' on the freebie T-shirts, watched as Tyler Matzek (2-4) pitched seven scoreless innings to earn his first win since June 11. The rookie scattered three hits and two walks and struck out three.
The offense erupted for 14 hits, with Josh Rutledge going 3-for-5 with three RBI, Nolan Arenado adding three hits, a homer and two driven in and Corey Dickerson coming off the bench and contributing a home run and two RBI.
Jeff Locke (2-2) surrendered six runs on 10 hits for Pittsburgh, which had won five of six coming into the series.
Rutledge singled in Colorado's first run in the third inning, and Drew Stubbs took Locke deep to left to open the fourth.
Arenado singled in a run in the fifth, and Dickerson added a run-scoring groundout later in the frame.
In the seventh, Arenado and Dickerson again struck, this time with solo blasts to up the Rockies' lead to 6-0.
Rutledge tacked on a two-run double in the eighth, while Ike Davis spoiled the Rockies' shutout bid with a pinch-hit homer off Brooks Brown in the ninth.
Game Notes
The Rockies announced that fans with the defective 'Tulowizki' jerseys can exchange them at a further date. They apologized and added those exchanging the jersey will receive a complimentary ticket to a future game in 2014 or 2015 ... Michael McKenry also had two hits for Colorado.
