Verlander, Tigers top Padres
Apr 13, 2014 - 6:01 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Verlander tallied his first career major league hit and fired seven innings of two-run ball in the Detroit Tigers' 6-2 win over the San Diego Padres in the middle test of a three-game set.Verlander (1-1) was 0-for-26 in his career at the plate before picking up his first hit on a single up the middle in the second. He went 2-or-3 at the dish and struck out eight, allowed eight hits and a walk on the bump for the Tigers, who moved to 6-3 on the young campaign.
"It felt great. It's been a long time and I can finally get all these guys off my back," Verlander said of his first hit.
Miguel Cabrera had an RBI double, while Rajai Davis recorded two hits and scored three times in the triumph.
Ian Kennedy (1-2) fanned seven and surrendered four runs on eight hits and a walk over six frames for San Diego, which had a brief two-game winning streak snapped.
"We had some opportunities ... we just couldn't punch anything across," Padres manager Bud Black said.

Ian Kinsler doubled to begin the third before Cabrera brought him home two batters later with a liner down the left-field line. Torii Hunter slapped a two-out, two-run single up the middle in the fourth to make it 4-1.
