Final
Lagares, Mets top Dodgers
May 23, 2014 - 5:10 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Juan Lagares' go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning helped the New York Mets to a 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the finale of a three-game set on Thursday.Curtis Granderson added an RBI triple in the eighth, while David Wright posted two hits and a run scored for the Mets, who had dropped six of their last seven games coming into the contest.
Jon Niese (3-3) surrendered three runs on four hits and three walks over seven innings to notch the win. Jenrry Mejia fired a 1-2-3 ninth to record his second save of the season.
"Pitched very well tonight, he used all of his pitches. He pitched a good game," Mets manager Terry Collins said of Niese.
Dodgers starter Zack Greinke allowed three runs -- one earned -- on four hits and two walks over five frames, ending his streak of 21 straight starts of yielding two runs or fewer.
Justin Turner belted a two-run homer in defeat.
After the Dodgers tied the game at 3-3 in the top half of the seventh, the Mets went ahead with a run in the home half and added to their cushion after plating another in the eighth.
Wilmer Flores led off the seventh with a single into left-center against Chris Perez (0-2) and a wild pitch allowed him to move to second. Lagares then whacked a base hit into right to bring him home and give the Mets a 4-3 edge.
Rookie Eric Campbell, making his first career start in left field, made a sensational diving catch in the top of the eighth before doubling Yasiel Puig off second base to preserve New York's advantage.
Wright looped a base hit into right and Granderson followed by smacking a shot off the top of the wall that Matt Kemp overran in right-center to make it 5-3. Granderson was later thrown out at home with one away after Lucas Duda bounced one to Hanley Ramirez at shortstop.
Earlier, Adrian Gonzalez's sacrifice fly into left in the first opened the scoring for LA before Campbell's sac fly into right in the second tied the score at 1-1.
Later in the second, Puig made an outstanding backhanded diving catch on a sinking, slicing liner off the bat of Flores.
The Mets pushed across two more in the fifth.
Back-to-back one-out doubles by Anthony Recker and Niese brought home a run to put New York in front. Niese moved to third on Lagares groundout and then scored for a 3-1 Mets lead when Turner was unable to range to his left to handle a Daniel Murphy roller in the hole.
"We've played incredible defense when I'm pitching throughout the years," Greinke said, "If someone makes one mistake in one game, you can't really say too much."
Turner, though, atoned for his mistake in the seventh by cracking his two-run blast into the seats in left to knot the contest.
Game Notes
The Mets were 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, while LA finished 0- for-4 ... Perez was charged with two runs on four hits over his 1 1/3 innings of work.
