Again! Padres top LA in another walk-off win
Aug 31, 2014 - 4:51 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Alexi Amarista's RBI single in the 10th inning gave the San Diego Padres a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday. It was San Diego's third straight walk-off victory in extra innings and its fourth straight win overall.
Will Venable started the 10th with a single off Jamey Wright (4-4) and stole second base. Amarista's winning hit to center field followed Yasmani Grandal's RBI single in the 12th inning to beat the Dodgers on Friday and Rene Rivera's RBI hit in the 10th against Milwaukee on Wednesday.
The Dodgers lost for the third time in their last five games and had their lead in the NL West trimmed to 2 1/2 games over San Francisco.
Padres manager Bud Black was ejected in the 10th inning by first base umpire Clint Fagan for arguing that Yasiel Puig didn't check his swing on what would have been an inning-ending strike three.
When told by a member of the media that it also could have been a called third strike, Black said, "I thought there were a number of ways to go on that one."
(Puig struck out anyway, ending the inning with a runner at second base.)
"That was a really pretty critical part of the game when you're talking about Yasiel Puig with Matt Kemp at second base in the 10th inning," said Black.
Zack Greinke threw eight strong inning for the Dodgers, striking out eight in another good performance against a division foe.
The Dodgers came up with two big defensive plays in the late innings to keep the score tied.
In the eighth, catcher Drew Butera picked off pinch-runner Cameron Maybin at second base after Rivera led off the inning with a double.
There were runners at first and second base with no outs in the bottom of the ninth when reliever J.P. Howell snared Grandal's sharp line drive at the mound and threw to second base for a double play. Brian Wilson came in to get the last out.
Padres starter Ian Kennedy didn't give up a hit until the fifth inning and helped his team on offense, too, with an RBI double to the right-center field gap in the third inning that scored Rivera.
That stood as the game's only run until Gonzalez teed off on a Kennedy fastball with two outs in the sixth inning for his 19th homer of the season.
Game Notes
Greinke is 8-0 in 11 starts against the NL West this season and 4-0 in seven career starts against the Padres ... Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner fell into the stands catching a foul pop in the fourth inning.
