Phillies earn narrow win to sweep Marlins
Apr 14, 2014 - 1:50 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chase Utley belted the go-ahead solo homer in the eighth inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-3 win over Miami to finish a three-game sweep of the Marlins.Utley's third homer of the year, a shot to right field off Mike Dunn (0-1) sent the Marlins to their seventh straight defeat. Utley, who upped his average to .500, is the first Phillies player to start a season with a 10-game hitting streak since Pat Burrell in 2005.
Wil Nieves went 3-for-4 with a two-run double for the Phillies. Utley and Tony Gwynn Jr. also had three hits apiece, as the Phillies beat the Marlins for the 11th time in the last 14 meetings. Ryan Howard also went deep for the hosts.
It was the second straight game the Phillies used a homer to beat the Marlins. Saturday night, Jimmy Rollins stroked a game-winning solo blast in the bottom of the 10th inning.
"The guys are patient at the plate and swinging the bats up and down the lineup," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "We had good at-bats throughout the game."
Garrett Jones homered for the Marlins, who fell to 0-6 on the road.
"Everyone has to take ownership for this trip," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "We've got to get better."
Antonio Bastardo (1-1) retired the side in order in the top of the eighth and Jonathan Papelbon did the same in the ninth to notch his third save.
Kyle Kendrick, who came into the game with a 12-2 lifetime mark against the Marlins, fanned seven and gave up six hits and three runs -- two earned -- over the first six innings.
Marlins starter Henderson Alvarez was charged with 12 hits and three runs over six frames.
Miami surged ahead in the opening inning when Casey McGehee's ground single into left field plated Christian Yelich.
It became 2-0 in the second when Yelich's bloop hit to center scored Jeff Mathis, but Howard homered to center in the third.
Jones went deep to right in the fifth before the Phillies tied the game in the bottom half. Utley singled and Domonic Brown's base hit came before Nieves' two-out double to the right-field corner.
Gwynn was thrown out at home trying to score on Utley's double to left field in the sixth. Sandberg came out to argue that Mathis blocked the plate ahead of the throw, but after a replay umpires kept the original call.
A.J. Ramos fanned pinch-hitter Ben Revere to leave two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh.
