Brewers power their way past Marlins
May 24, 2014 - 2:40 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Mark Reynolds hit two homers and drove in four runs as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Miami Marlins, 9-5, in the opener of a three-game set.Carlos Gomez went 4-for-5 with three doubles, two RBI and two runs scored, Khris Davis homered and Scooter Gennett knocked in a pair of runs for Milwaukee, which had lost five of its last six coming in.
"My gosh were there some long home runs hit," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "Hopefully (Reynolds) can stay hot. Gomez was great again. We really swung the bat well today."
Brewers starter Marco Estrada (4-2) earned the win, allowing five runs on six hits with seven strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.
Tom Koehler (4-4) was issued the loss after he surrendered seven runs on nine hits over five innings.
"Tonight he just had a tough time executing pitches," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of Koehler. "He made a lot of mistakes out over the plate. (The Brewers) are a very aggressive team."
Giancarlo Stanton and Garrett Jones each hit a pair of solo homers for the Marlins, who had their two-game winning streak snapped.
Jean Segura singled to center in the opening at-bat of the game, then moved to third after a throwing error by Jarrod Saltalamacchia on a stolen base attempt. Gennett lifted a sacrifice fly into left.
Stanton got the run back in the home half with a long drive to center.
Carlos Gomez doubled to lead off the fourth and Reynolds followed with a homer to left to push the margin to 3-1.
Reynolds highlighted a four-run fifth inning with a two-run blast to left. Segura singled with one out and Gennett brought him around with a triple into the right-field corner. Gomez's double two batters later scored Gennett and Reynolds followed with a drive to left that made it 7-1.
Jones led off the home half of the fifth with a homer to right, but Davis answered with a bomb that cleared the bullpen in left-center.
Jonathan Lucroy opened the seventh with a double to left and Gomez followed with an RBI double to increase the cushion.
Stanton delivered his second of the game with a drive to left to lead off the seventh and Jones knocked out his second of the night two batters later to cut the deficit to 9-4.
Ed Lucas added an RBI single later in the seventh to account for the final margin.
Game Notes
The seven combined homers is the most in Marlins Park. The original mark was six set on June 17, 2012 against the Braves ... Ryan Braun was not in Milwaukee's starting lineup due to tightness in his right side ... Segura swiped his 10th base of the season ... It was Reynolds' 20th career multi-HR game ... The Brewers have won the last five meetings.
