Cards halt Brewers' roll behind Lynn

Apr 15, 2014 - 5:49 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Lance Lynn pitched seven scoreless innings to help the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-0 shutout of the Milwaukee Brewers in the opener of a three-game set.

Lynn (3-0) gave up just three hits with three walks while striking out 11 to win his third straight start to begin the season. Jhonny Peralta hit a solo home run and Jon Jay clubbed a three-run shot for the Cardinals, who have won three straight.

"He did a great job of controlling his counts and mixing his fastballs," said St. Louis manager Mike Matheny about Lynn. "He didn't get in much trouble and did a great job of controlling the plate."

Matt Garza (0-2) was touched for four runs on nine hits with a walk and six strikeouts in seven innings of work for the Brewers, who had won nine straight coming in. Jean Segura had two of the three hits for Milwaukee.

Peralta got St. Louis the only run it needed when he led off the second with his third home run of the year, a shot to center.

In the sixth, the Cardinals padded their lead with three more runs. Matt Holliday led off with a single and Matt Adams followed with a double that saw Holliday nailed at home. A grounder back to first by Allen Craig saw Adams tagged out at third, but Peralta kept the inning alive with a single.

Jay then roped a pitch over the wall in right for his first of the season and a 4-0 lead.

"That was a big momentum shift right there," said Garza. "That was a big back- breaker in the game, but it happens and we'll be back out here tomorrow."

Lynn faced his first trouble of the game in the fifth, as Scooter Gennett walked with two outs and Logan Schafer followed with a double. Lynn, though, got Matt Garza to look at strike three to end the frame.

Lynn left two more on base in the sixth, then stranded a runner in the seventh before Carlos Martinez pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and did the same in the ninth to finish off the shutout.
