Brewers slip past Padres
Apr 22, 2014 - 5:06 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Braun drove in a pair of runs and the Milwaukee Brewers posted their fourth consecutive win with a 4-3 decision over the San Diego Padres at Miller Park.Aramis Ramirez added a solo homer and Scooter Gennett went 2-for-3 with an RBI triple for Milwaukee, which received 6 1/3 solid innings from Wily Peralta and tagged Padres starter Andrew Cashner for four runs in six frames to claim the opener of this three-game series.
"I just didn't have my best stuff tonight, but I tried to keep us in the game," Cashner said.
Peralta (3-0) struck out six while holding San Diego to three runs -- two earned -- to outduel Cashner (2-2), who entered the matchup with a 1.27 ERA over his first four starts.
Three Milwaukee relievers blanked the Padres the rest of the way, with Francisco Rodriguez working the ninth to notch his eighth save of the season.
Yonder Alonso had two hits and an RBI to pace San Diego offensively, while Chris Denorfia homered in the setback.
Cashner had his fate sealed by one rough inning, a three-run third that began when Peralta helped his own cause by lacing a double to deep left-center field. Two batters later, Gennett drove a pitch to the wall in right center for a triple that knocked in the game's initial run before crossing the plate on Braun's sacrifice fly.
Ramirez followed by crushing a fastball over the center-field fence for a 2-0 Milwaukee advantage.
Peralta yielded just one hit over the first three innings prior to running into some trouble in the fourth. He walked Chase Headley after a leadoff single by Seth Smith, who later scored on Alonso's base hit to get San Diego on the board. Gennett's wild throw from second to first on a potential double- play ball brought the Padres within 3-2 when Headley scored on the play.
Milwaukee put up a much-needed insurance run in the fifth, as Carlos Gomez doubled and was bunted over to third by Gennett in front of Braun's single to left.
Denorfia opened the seventh with a homer to again cut the lead to one, and Nick Hundley followed with a pinch-hit double before an error by Brewers shortstop Jean Segura put two on with none out.
Both runners moved up on a sacrifice, and the bases were soon loaded when Will Smith walked Xavier Nady after taking over for Peralta. He worked his way out of the jam, however, by retiring Seth Smith on a short fly ball and fanning Headley.
Gennett singled off Rodriguez with one down in the ninth but was left stranded.
Game Notes
Cashner had a string of 11 consecutive quality starts -- tied for the longest streak in Padres history -- come to an end. He had permitted two runs or fewer in 10 straight outings ... Braun is on a six-game hitting streak and has gone 6-for-12 with two homers and six RBI over his last three contests ... The Brewers improved to 11-0 when collecting more hits than the opposition ... Milwaukee outfielder Khris Davis was scratched from the lineup due to a stomach virus.
