Moss, A's blank Nats
May 10, 2014 - 5:36 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Moss homered and drove in three as the Oakland Athletics blanked the Washington Nationals, 8-0, on Friday in the opener of a three-game set.Tommy Milone (1-3) spun eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits and three walks with seven strikeouts against his former team.
Milone was dealt to Oakland in the Gio Gonzalez trade in 2011.
"He got off to a roll," said A's manager Bob Melvin of Milone. "It was definitely his best game of the season, but he is capable of that."
John Jaso and Yoenis Cespedes both hit solo shots for Oakland, which has won two straight.
Doug Fister (0-1) made his season debut after straining his lat muscle during spring training and the right-hander tossed 4 1/3 innings and surrendered seven runs -- five earned -- on nine hits with two strikeouts.
"I think he'll be much better next time out," Nats mangager Matt Williams said of Fister. "You take the positives out of it. He felt good, his arm felt good. Everything was fine."
Scott Hairston collected two of Washington's three hits in the setback.
Following a throwing error from Fister that allowed Josh Donaldson to reach third, Moss slapped a single into right that opened the scoring.
Jaso then led off the third with a solo homer to right-center, and the hosts added on in the fourth with Cespedes scoring on a wild pitch and Eric Sogard driving in Josh Reddick with a single to make it 4-0.
Moss delivered a two-run blast to center and Cespedes followed with a shot to right.
Derek Norris had an RBI single in the seventh to account for the final margin.
