Norris helps A's beat Rangers
Jun 18, 2014 - 7:21 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Derek Norris didn't start, but he made the most of his opportunity when called upon.Norris finished 2-for-2 with a homer and five RBI to help the Oakland Athletics fend off the Texas Rangers, 10-6, in the second tilt of a three-game set.
Stephen Vogt went 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Coco Crisp and Alberto Callaspo added an RBI apiece for Oakland, which has won three of four.
Tommy Milone (5-3) continued his recent success, earning the win after allowing three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Milone is 5-0 in his last eight starts, with the A's winning in his last six appearances.
Texas starter Yu Darvish had trouble once again with Oakland, surrendering seven runs -- four earned -- on eight hits and an unlikely five walks over five-plus innings.
Darvish entered the game with an 0-7 record and 5.32 ERA in his last eight starts against the A's.
"Obviously, it's a great team win," said Vogt. "(Darvish) is such a good pitcher and we've been fortunate enough to have success against him."
Rougned Odor had a homer and a triple, knocking in three runs for the Rangers, who had won four of five coming in.
Texas opened up the scoring in the first with an RBI single off the bat of Adrian Beltre that scored Daniel Robertson.
After no runs in the home half of the first, Oakland plated runs in each of the next five innings off Darvish.
Singles from Jed Lowrie, Vogt and Callaspo to begin the second helped Oakland to a 2-1 lead. Callaspo poked a slow dribbler through the hole on the right side that scored Lowrie, and a throwing error by Alex Rios allowed Vogt to cross home.
Vogt added an RBI single in the next frame and Crisp supplied a sacrifice fly in the fourth to make it 4-1.
Texas got one back in the top of the fifth when Odor popped a solo homer out to right, but Vogt poked a single to right in the home half for a 5-2 edge.
Elvis Andrus doubled to lead off the sixth and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Rios as the Rangers cut the deficit to 5-3.
Callaspo walked to start the home half of the sixth and Nick Punto reached on a throwing error by Odor, ending Darvish's night. Aaron Poreda came on in relief and got two quick outs before handing the ball over to Shawn Tolleson. Norris, who pinch-hit for John Jaso, drilled a homer into left to grab a comfortable five-run lead.
"I didn't have command of any of my pitches," said Darvish. "For some reason, I don't have good numbers against them."
Odor made up for the error in the seventh with a two-run triple that scored Chris Gimenez and Leonys Martin. Robertson followed with an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 8-6.
Norris supplied a two-run double in the eighth that scored Josh Donaldson and Crisp.
Sean Doolittle pitched a perfect ninth to run his scoreless innings mark to 21 1/3 innings.
Game Notes
Doolittle last yielded a run on April 26, when he allowed four runs at Houston ... Darvish is now 1-8 all-time against Oakland ... Milone entered 1-4 in seven career starts against Texas ... It was the first time in eight meetings this season that the home team won ... The Athletics placed pitcher Drew Pomeranz on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, one day after he fractured his non-pitching right hand. Reliever Evan Scribner was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to replace Pomeranz on the active roster.
