Brignac's blast in 9th lifts Phils past Padres
Jun 12, 2014 - 4:54 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Reid Brignac slammed a game-winning three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Philadelphia Phillies a 3-0 win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday at Citizens Bank Park. With Nick Vincent (0-2) on the mound, Domonic Brown worked a one-out walk and Carlos Ruiz was hit by a pitch. Brignac then drove a 2-0 pitch well over the wall in right for the victory.
"You never get used to situations like this," said Brignac. "It's like I said before, it's why we play the game and you can really enjoy the moment."
Jonathan Papelbon (2-1) got the win for pitching a flawless ninth to back eight stellar frames from Cole Hamels, who struck out 11 while walking one and giving up five hits.
The Phillies have won the first two games of the three-game series -- their first back-to-back victories since taking three straight from May 17-20.
Tyson Ross was equally effective for San Diego as he gave up four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over seven innings.
"He threw the ball well, no doubt about it," said San Diego manager Bud Black about Ross. "We're seeing before our eyes Tyson grow into a major league pitcher."
There weren't a lot of scoring opportunities in the game, but the Phillies nearly got one in the first inning.
Jimmy Rollins hit a one-out single and with Ryan Howard at the plate, he stole second. The shift was on for Howard at the time, and with no one covering third, Rollins took that bag as well. Howard eventually worked a walk, but Marlon Byrd struck out to end the frame.
The Padres left a man on third in the third, then left the bags loaded in the fourth as Cameron Maybin struck out to end the frame.
San Diego didn't get a runner to second for the rest of the game.
Game Notes
Rollins now has 2,232 career hits, just two shy of tying Mike Schmidt for the Phillies' all-time lead ... San Diego left six men on base and Philadelphia seven ... Kyle Kendrick pitches for Philadelphia on Thursday, while Eric Stults will work the hill for San Diego.
