Gyorko's grand slam lifts Padres past Cardinals
Aug 17, 2014 - 6:26 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jedd Gyorko had a grand slam and drove in five runs to help the San Diego Padres to a 9-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at a rainy Busch Stadium.Just prior to a one hour and 47 minute rain delay, the Cardinals led 5-4 when Gyorko's blast gave the Padres their first lead of the game.
Abraham Almonte started the rally with a bunt single. Seth Smith had a base hit and Yasmani Grandal walked to load the bags for Gyorko. The young third baseman's second grand slam of the season made it 8-5. Kevin Siegrist (1-3) lasted just two-thirds of an inning and was charged with all four seventh- inning runs.
Neither starter fared well in this one. Jesse Hahn gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings for San Diego, while Cardinals starter Shelby Miller walked a career- high six batters and gave up four runs in six innings.
Alex Torres (2-1) picked up the win for finishing the sixth. The Padres have won six of eight.
Hahn fell apart in the second inning, as three doubles led to four St. Louis runs. Jhonny Peralta and Oscar Taveras each drove in a run with two-baggers and with two outs, Matt Carpenter plated a pair with his double to center.
"He might be getting a little tired, but mentally he's in a good spot," Padres manager Bud Black said of Hahn. "He's competing, he's not backing down."
The Padres quickly got all four runs back. With two gone in the top of the third, Gyorko singled to right to plate Almonte. Rymer Liriano then walked to load the bases and Goebbert cleared them with a triple to right field.
"Unacceptable," said Miller. "Didn't sit well with me, but other than that I threw out three more zeros after that."
Matt Adams put the Cards back in front in the home fifth, following Matt Holliday's two-out walk with an RBI triple to right.
Following the delay, Smith made it 9-5 with his RBI single in the eighth.
Game Notes
The Padres won for just the fifth time in the last 25 meetings in St. Louis ... The Cardinals' three-game win streak came to an end. They haven't won four in a row since a season-high five-game streak from June 13-17 ... Jon Jay is batting 10-for-20 during his eight-game hit streak.
