After lengthy rain delay, Mariners top Rangers
Sep 7, 2014 - 7:02 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Kendrys Morales knocked in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning and the Seattle Mariners topped the Texas Rangers 4-2 in a game that ended early Sunday morning. The start was delayed three hours and 13 minutes because of rain.
"It's worth the wait for a lot of different reasons," said Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon. "Obviously a doubleheader tomorrow would not have been good for us. And we won, so it's a good day."
Kyle Seager blasted a two-run homer for Seattle, which has won five straight and is a game-and-a-half up on Detroit for the AL's second wild-card spot.
Chris Denorfia walked to begin the eighth and went to third base on Seager's one-out single. Morales then broke a 2-2 tie with a base hit to left field off Neal Cotts (2-9). A single by Logan Morrison plated Seager.
Danny Farquhar (2-1) tossed a scoreless seventh and eighth before Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth to earn his 43rd save.
The Rangers suffered their eighth consecutive loss.
Texas opened the scoring in the fourth. Tomas Telis reached on a fielding error by Brad Miller at shortstop and Ryan Rua made the Mariners pay with an RBI double off starter Chris Young. Luis Sardinas then sacrificed Rua over to third before Michael Choice lifted a sacrifice fly to center to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Robinson Cano singled with one out in the sixth to set up Kyle Seager's game- tying blast to right off Texas starter Nick Martinez.
Game Notes
Miller collected four hits ... The Rangers were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base ... Young allowed four hits, walked three and struck out six in five innings ... Martinez gave up six hits over six innings.
