Mets rout Phillies to conclude five-game set

Jun 3, 2014 - 7:16 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Wilmer Flores hit a grand slam and knocked in a career-high six runs, and the New York Mets took an 11-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the finale of a five-game set from Citizens Bank Park.

Bartolo Colon (5-5) earned the victory after hurling seven-plus innings, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

David Wright and Curtis Granderson each knocked in a pair of runs in the win, New York's ninth win in its last 10 in the City of Brotherly Love.

"That's why you play," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "If you are going to be out there all that time, (you) might as well win the games."

Roberto Hernandez (2-3) was saddled with the loss, giving up five runs -- four earned -- on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

The Phillies and Mets played a total of 57 innings in the unconventional series. Philadelphia dropped the final three games of the set and ended its 11-game homestand with a 4-7 mark.

"That was the end of a tough series for us," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "(Some) grueling games, tough games. We go on the road and start a new series. Hopefully we can get things going in the right direction."

Bobby Abreu doubled into the right-field corner with one out in the second and Lucas Duda followed with a run-scoring double to make it 1-0 Mets.

Ryan Howard, who homered in each of the last two games coming in, skied a towering drive out to center in the bottom half, where Matt den Dekker leaped at the wall to rob Howard of a solo homer.

Den Dekker saved another run in the third when he pegged Reid Brignac at home following a single by Ben Revere.

New York opened the sixth inning with three straight hits. Den Dekker and Daniel Murphy each singled to put runners at the corners before Wright knocked in both with a double to center.

Later in the inning, Chase Utley booted a potential inning-ending double play ball, and Flores made the Phillies pay with a double into right that scored two and increased the cushion to 5-0.

After a walk to Cesar Hernandez and a double by Utley, Howard got the Phillies on the board with an RBI groundout in the home half of the sixth.

Philadelphia chased Colon after back-to-back singles from Ben Revere and Hernandez to begin the eighth. Utley then flied out which allowed Revere to advance to third with one out.

Howard struck out, but Revere crossed home on a wild pitch by Jeurys Familia.

The Mets left no doubt of the game's outcome as Flores highlighted a six-run ninth with his grand slam off Phillippe Aumont.
