Dunn, Sale lead ChiSox past Tigers
Aug 30, 2014 - 10:39 PM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Dunn belted a two-run homer, Jose Abreu collected three hits with an RBI and the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3 in the opener of a day-night doubleheader at U.S. Cellular Field.Chicago ace Chris Sale (11-3) gave up homers to two of the first four batters, but silenced Detroit through the rest of his seven-inning outing. The lefty gave up six hits overall, walked two and struck out a season-high 13.
Jake Petricka earned his 10th save of the season after getting Ian Kinsler to ground into a game-ending double play.
Max Scherzer (15-5) allowed six runs -- five earned -- on nine hits and fanned 11 with no walks in 6 2/3 innings for the Tigers.
Kinsler opened the contest with a home run to left field. Victor Martinez came in batting .520 (13-for-25) against Sale and that success continued when he blasted a two-run homer to left-center field for a 3-0 Detroit lead.
The White Sox got on the board in the bottom of the first with the help of two errors -- the last a miscue by Kinsler that allowed Alexei Ramirez to score -- and surged ahead with a four-run third.
Scherzer gave up four consecutive one-out hits, the first a single by Adam Eaton, who promptly stole second. Ramirez plated Eaton with a ground-rule double and scored on an Abreu single. Dunn then launched his 20th home run of the year to right to make it 5-3.
"I left a curveball too much in the zone. The idea was right. It was a 2-1 count. We had the shift on. Throw a curveball to try to get (Dunn) to hit it into the shift, but unfortunately it was a little bit too elevated," Scherzer said.
Tyler Flowers added a solo shot off Scherzer in the fourth.
"You go down three in the first against these guys with Scherzer on the mound, you don't like your chances. But these guys grinded it out," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura.
The Tigers threatened against Petricka with a one-out walk and a Rajai Davis single before Kinsler's double-play grounder.
Game Notes
Scherzer had posted a 0.96 ERA while winning his first four starts against the White Sox this season ... Detroit was 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
