Yankees score 3 in 8th to beat Blue Jays
Apr 9, 2015 - 4:15 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Sometimes a little help from the other team is all it takes. The New York Yankees got their first win of the season with an odd rally in the eighth inning Wednesday night that included a bloop double, a couple of hit batters, a wild pitch and a deflected ground ball.
At the end, it was Chase Headley's RBI single that punctuated the three-run flurry and give the Yankees a 4-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
It came after the Yankees started the season with a 6-1 loss in the opener of the three-game series Monday, spoiling Alex Rodriguez's regular-season return.
They trailed this one 3-1 before Chris Young's bloop to shallow right field, and his hustling burst to second base, sparked the late-inning rally.
Jacoby Ellsbury added a single and finished with two hits and two runs scored for New York, which got six innings and six strikeouts from Michael Pineda, who made his season debut after a strong spring training and gave up two runs.
"We just took advantage of the miscues and some of the things that happened ... but we got it done and that's what mattered," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi.
Devon Travis had two hits for the Blue Jays and helped them score two of their three runs.
Toronto knuckleballer R.A. Dickey gave up one run on four hits and three walks in 6 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out four and left the game with the lead intact.
"I was happy with the overall result," Dickey said. "It was tough to get a feel for (my knuckleball) consistently because it was cold and the balls were a bit slick."
Ellsbury followed Young's double with a hit to center and Aaron Loup (0-1) hit Brett Gardner before giving way to Brett Cecil, whose wild pitch scored Young.
Cecil struck out Carlos Beltran before intentionally walking Mark Teixeira and beaning Brian McCann to force in Ellsbury with the tying run. Headley then knocked a bouncer toward the mound that deflected off Cecil into left field, scoring Gardner to give the Yankees a 4-3 lead.
Andrew Miller, in his regular-season Yankees debut, picked up his second career save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Toronto scored in the third when Travis hit a ground ball to shortstop Didi Gregorius and beat a high throw to plate Kevin Pillar. Travis singled in the fifth and scored on Russell Martin's sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
Dickey held the Yankees to two hits through five innings but gave up a leadoff single in the sixth to Ellsbury, who stole second and moved up on a groundout before scoring New York's first run on Beltran's sacrifice fly.
Jose Bautista drew a one-out walk off Dellin Betances (1-0) in the eighth, went to third on Edwin Encarnacion's single and scored when McCann's throw hit the dirt as he tried to pick off Encarnacion.
Game Notes
Each team left seven runners on base ... The Yankees won despite going 2- for-11 with runners in scoring position ... Left-handers CC Sabathia of the Yankees and Daniel Norris of the Blue Jays will start the series finale between the AL East foes on Thursday.
