Red Sox take series in Philly
Apr 10, 2015 - 3:51 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Xander Bogaerts' three-run triple highlighted Boston's six-run third inning that was the difference as the Red Sox took down the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2 in the rubber match of a three- game series from Citizens Bank Park.Justin Masterson (1-0) struck outs seven in six innings of work for Boston, allowing both runs on three hits.
"I threw strikes, slider was good, mixing up speeds with the fastball," Masterson said. "That's going to be the key to success for me."
His counterpart, second-year pro David Buchanan (0-1), didn't make it past that third inning. Buchanan was charged with all six runs on seven hits and four walks.
Buchanan flirted with trouble in the first and second innings, allowing a pair of baserunners in each, before imploding in the third.
"His command just seemed to be off right from the get-go," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg. "He was missing off the plate."
David Ortiz jump-started a two-out rally with an infield single to second. Hanley Ramirez then singled, Pablo Sandoval walked and former Phillie Shane Victorino plated the game's first run with another infield single.
Buchanan walked Ryan Hanigan to force in the second run before Bogaerts cleared the bases with a bloop triple that Jeff Francoeur misplayed in right field. Masterson then helped his own cause, plating Bogaerts with a single to make it 6-0.
Mookie Betts, who started the inning by lining out to left, finally finished it with a groundout.
Philly got two back in the home half, with Freddy Galvis scoring on a wild pitch and Chase Utley knocking in a run with a single to center.
Both offenses stalled the rest of the way.
Game Notes
Bogaerts finished 3-for-4, while Ramirez, Victorino and Masterson all had two hits ... Dustin McGowan and Justin De Fratus each pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Philadelphia. De Fratus struck out four ... Galvis committed two errors.
