D-backs rout Rockies, lose Bradley to injury
Apr 29, 2015 - 7:05 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Mark Trumbo was a double shy of the cycle, finishing 4-for-4 with three runs and four RBI to power the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 12-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies in the second of a three-game set on Tuesday.Paul Goldschmidt supplied three hits, three RBI and two runs scored and David Peralta hit a two-run homer for the Diamondbacks, who ended a four-game skid.
Starter Archie Bradley's outing was cut short after he was struck in the head by Carlos Gonzalez's line drive in the second inning.
Play was halted and the medical staff was summoned after the pitcher fell down and was motionless on the mound. He was conscious, but bleeding. He eventually walked off under his own power and responded to the crowd's cheers with a thumbs-up gesture.
"It was really tough," Trumbo said on Bradley's injury. "He seems to be in good spirits so that's good news."
Arizona head athletic trainer Ken Crenshaw informed the media after the game that Bradley's prognosis was positive and that he did not have a concussion.
Andrew Chafin (1-0) relieved Bradley and earned his first career win after giving up two runs on six hits with four strikeouts over 2 2/3 frames.
Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Kyle Kendrick (1-3) was peppered for eight runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings for the Rockies.
"They swung the bats really well," said Kendrick. "Obviously, I wasn't good at all. I just have to keep battling."
Arizona led 3-0 before Kendrick even recorded an out. A.J. Pollock singled to open the game and moved to second before Chris Owings' base hit placed runners on the corners. Goldschmidt provided an RBI single on a grounder up the middle and Trumbo hustled for a two-run triple.
Morneau hit a ground-rule double to start the second. After striking out Nolan Arenado, Bradley was hit in the face by Gonzalez's line drive. Chafin replaced him and walked Nick Hundley to load the bases. DJ LeMahieu followed with a RBI single to center to put the Rockies on the board.
In the third, Colorado loaded the bases on a walk and two singles, but Chafin struck out Gonzalez and Hundley to escape the jam.
Each team added two runs in the fourth. Kendrick and Blackmon each doubled to bring in a run and Troy Tulowitzki's RBI single two batters later tied the game.
In the home half, Trumbo led off with a grounder up the middle and came home after Peralta crushed a 2-0 cutter to right for a 5-3 lead.
Trumbo continued to knock around Kendrick in the fifth by golfing a low cutter to center, plating Goldschmidt, who got aboard with a one-out double.
After Peralta doubled, Christian Bergman relieved Kendrick and issued a walk to Yasmany Tomas. Peralta moved to third on a wild pitch and made it an 8-3 game after Aaron Hill grounded into a force out.
Blackmon had an RBI single in the sixth, but Tomas doubled in a run during the seventh. Ender Inciarte followed suit in the eighth inning and Goldschmidt drove in two with a two-bagger for a 12-4 score.
Justin Morneau's run-scoring single in the ninth accounted for the final score.
