Lawrie, Reddick power A's over Angels

Apr 29, 2015 - 6:25 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brett Lawrie hit a three-run home run to lead the Oakland Athletics to a 6-2 win over the LA Angels of Anaheim in the opener of a three-game set on Tuesday.

Josh Reddick hit a solo home run and drove in three runs for the Athletics, who snapped a four-game skid. Sonny Gray (3-0) went eight innings and gave up two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out six.

David Freese drove in both runs for the Angels, who have dropped their past two. Jered Weaver (0-3) allowed six runs on six hits while striking out one in seven innings.

"That's not the way you want to start it off," said Weaver. "You just want to go out there and get a 1-2-3 inning, but obviously that didn't happen."

The Angels started out the game strong as Kole Calhoun walked to lead off and Albert Pujols singled two batters later to put runners on the corners. Pujols took second on a wild pitch, and Freese punched a single up the middle for a 2-0 lead.

In the home half, the A's answered with five runs. With one out, Marcus Semien and Stephen Vogt singled before Billy Butler was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ike Davis then fouled out, but Reddick knocked a single to right that scored two, and Lawrie followed with his second homer of the year for a 5-2 lead.

"It was big for us to come back with a big first after they started out with a good frame," said Reddick. "After that, Sonny didn't give them much to work with."

Reddick's two-out solo shot in the sixth staked Oakland to a 6-2 advantage.

After getting out of a two-on, two-out jam in the second, Gray was nearly flawless as the only batter he allowed to reach base was Erick Aybar, who singled to start the seventh. Gray then got Matt Joyce to hit into a double play and C.J. Cron to pop out to end the inning.

Evan Scribner struck out the side in the ninth to secure the win.
