Heyward, Cards finish off Cubs
May 8, 2015 - 2:36 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jason Heyward finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI to fuel St. Louis' 5-1 victory over Chicago in the finale of a four-game series.Peter Bourjos also drove in a run for the Cardinals, who took three of four in the series and have won nine of 10 overall. St. Louis finished its homestand 9-2 and upped their major-league best record to 21-7.
John Lackey (2-1) struck out 10 while allowing only a run on five hits with a walk over 7 2/3 innings. He also contributed an RBI double.
"We needed that from Lackey for sure," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "It was just a really nice ending to a very, very good home sked."
Chris Coghlan and Jorge Soler each collected two hits and Starlin Castro knocked in the lone run for the Cubs, who have dropped six of their last eight outings.
Jake Arrieta (3-3) was tagged for five runs -- four earned -- on nine hits over 5 1/3 frames, despite fanning seven.
"We could have gave a better effort. Now it's back-to-back starts where I haven't been very good," Arrieta noted. "I've got some work to do. I need to clean some things up."
Lackey boosted his offense in the home fourth, providing a 4-0 advantage after doubling home Heyward with two outs. Bourjos scored on Soler's fielding error.
"I was lucky," said Lackey, whose swing pushed the ball down the right-field line. "It was just because I swung late."
Heyward singled in the sixth, moved to third on a Yadier Molina base hit and scored on a wild pitch for a 5-0 St. Louis edge, then Chicago got on the board one half-frame later as Soler doubled and scored when Castro followed with a base hit.
Lackey departed with Coghlan on first in the eighth, and Kevin Siegrist induced a foul out from Anthony Rizzo to end the frame.
Siegrist walked Miguel Montero to start the ninth, then Seth Maness allowed a Soler single before yielding to Trevor Rosenthal. Rosenthal retired the next three batters to preserve the winning margin and gain his 10th save.
The Cards plated two in the second on an RBI single from Heyward and run- scoring triple off the bat of Bourjos.
Game Notes
Lackey posted his 18th career double-digit strikeout game ... On this date five years ago, Castro made his MLB debut with a triple, three-run homer and six RBI in a 14-7 decision over Cincinnati.
