Freese lifts Angels over Blue Jays

May 20, 2015 - 5:36 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - David Freese's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning lifted the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to a 3-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Kole Calhoun hit a solo homer and scored twice for the Angels, who snapped a two-game skid. Chris Iannetta went 2-for-4 and drove in the other run.

Los Angeles starter Hector Santiago (3-2) gave up two runs -- one earned -- on four hits while striking out five and walking three over seven innings. He won for the first time since April 21 against Oakland.

"Santiago was really good," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "He was picking the plate apart."

Josh Donaldson hit a solo homer and drove in both runs for the Blue Jays, who went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded five. Aaron Sanchez (3-4) allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks over 7 1/3 innings.

Trailing 2-1, the Angels scored the tying run in the seventh. Calhoun walked, moved to second on Freese's groundout and advanced to third on a wild pitch from Sanchez. Matt Joyce then walked to put men on the corners for Iannetta, who hit an RBI single to left-center field.

Taylor Featherston bounced into a fielder's choice and Johnny Giavotella grounded out to end the inning.

Los Angeles scored another run in the eighth. Erick Aybar led off with a single and Albert Pujols worked a one-out walk before Roberto Osuna came in from the bullpen to face Calhoun, who reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Freese's sacrifice fly to center made it a 3-2 game.

Joe Smith tossed a scoreless bottom of the eighth and Huston Street pitched a perfect ninth for his 13th save of the season.

Donaldson led off the bottom of the first with a homer to right-center field. Calhoun tied things up with a solo homer of his own in the fourth.

"He kept his composure and kept pounding the zone," Iannetta said of Santiago.

The Blue Jays took the lead back in the fifth. Kevin Pillar reached on Aybar's fielding error, moved to second when Steve Tolleson walked, then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Donaldson's sacrifice fly.

Game Notes

Aybar extended his hitting streak to 10 games ... Joyce went 0-for-3 Tuesday after being scratched from the lineup for Monday afternoon's game against Toronto ... Prior to the game, the Blue Jays recalled pitcher Scott Copeland from Triple-A Buffalo and designated pitcher Todd Redmond for assignment.
