Braves destroy Brewers

May 22, 2015 - 4:19 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Julio Teheran pitched seven strong innings to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 10-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in the opener of a four-game set.

Teheran (4-1) gave up a run on two hits with one walk and eight strikeouts for the Braves, who have won five of six. Cameron Maybin, Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis each drove in a pair of runs in the win.

Ryan Braun drove in the only run of the game for the Brewers, who have lost four of six. Matt Garza (2-6) was touched for four runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings.

The score was tied 1-1 going into the seventh inning, then the Braves blew the game wide open.

Jonny Gomes led off with a single and Alberto Callaspo followed suit. After a bunt from Andrelton Simmons saw Callaspo forced out at second, Christian Bethancourt then singled home Gomes to chase Garza from the mound.

Will Smith then took over and hit Pedro Ciriaco with a pitch before the umpires, prompted by Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez, came out to the mound and ejected Smith, who appeared to have a shiny substance on his left forearm.

"When [an opponent] tries to be that blatant, sometimes you just have to do what you have to do," Gonzalez said.

Smith later confirmed that it was sunscreen and rosin that he applied while warming up in the bullpen, and forgot to wipe it off before coming into the game.

"It was chilly and kind of windy," said Smith. "I had rosin and sunscreen on my arm. I just forgot to wipe it off before I went out and pitched. I had to kind of get ready in a hurry. I just forgot. That's it."

After Neal Cotts replaced Smith, Jace Peterson dropped a single to left- center that scored a run. Maybin brought home two more with a single after Michael Blazek became the fourth pitcher of the frame.

Freeman and Markakis brought home a run each with a single and double, respectively, before a bad throw from Hector Gomez allowed another run to score for an 8-1 lead.

A wild pitch from Brandon Kintzler in the eighth scored another run for Atlanta, and Freeman later put the Braves into double digits with an RBI single.

Atlanta took a 1-0 lead in the first as Maybin walked, stole second and scored on a Markakis single. The Brewers got the run back in the fourth on Braun's sac fly.
