Gonzalez strong in debut as Rangers blank Red Sox
May 31, 2015 - 2:39 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Chi Chi Gonzalez pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings in his MLB debut to help the Texas Rangers to an 8-0 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday. The 23rd overall pick out of Oral Roberts in 2013, Gonzalez (1-0) took a no- hitter into the sixth inning and allowed just two hits and five walks while striking out two for the win.
Leonys Martin, Robinson Chirinos and Hanser Alberto each drove in two runs, while Adam Rosales was 4-for-4 with two runs scored for the Rangers, who have taken the last two after dropping the opener of this four-game series.
Wade Miley (4-5) gave up six runs -- five earned -- on nine hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts in four-plus innings for the Red Sox, who have dropped five of their last six.
Texas worked a quick run across in the first inning as Delino DeShields led off with a single and Elvis Andrus brought him home with a double to left. Andrus then moved to third on a Prince Fielder groundout, but was caught in a rundown after Adrian Beltre hit a grounder back to the mound.
In the fourth, the Rangers put three men on base and Chirinos hit a liner over the head of Rusney Castillo to bring in two. Alberto then hit a grounder back to short and Brock Holt went home with the ball, but he one-hopped it to the plate and Martin was able to slide around the tag. DeShields then laid a bunt down the first base line that scored Chirinos for a 5-0 lead.
Beltre scored in the fifth on a line drive fielder's choice from Martin for a 6-0 advantage.
Gonzalez held Boston without a hit through the first five innings, but David Ortiz doubled to lead off the sixth. A groundout by Hanley Ramirez moved Ortiz to third, but Pablo Sandoval then hit a grounder back to the mound and Ortiz was caught in a rundown. Mike Napoli followed with a double that spelled the end of Gonzalez's night.
Tanner Scheppers took over on the mound and struck out Holt to end the inning.
An RBI double from Martin and RBI single by Alberto in the seventh inning extended Texas' lead to 8-0.
