Rockies top Phillies to complete road sweep
May 31, 2015 - 11:51 PM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Nolan Arenado and DJ LeMahieu each hit two-run home runs and Chris Rusin pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to help the Colorado Rockies complete their first ever three-game road sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies with a 4-1 win.Rusin (1-0) took the mound in the second inning after starter Jordan Lyles left the game with a toe injury. He yielded four hits and a walk to help the Rockies to their seventh win in eight games.
"We were a little light in the bullpen, so Rusin was huge getting us to the point he did," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss.
Arenado, who has been one of the hottest hitters in the majors of late, smacked his ninth homer this month and fifth in his last seven games.
Jerome Williams (3-5) took the loss for Philadelphia after allowing all four runs on eight hits over five innings. The Phillies have dropped seven straight, totaling just 12 runs during the stretch.
Arenado wasted no time putting his stamp on this one, crushing the first pitch he saw in the top of the first inning out to center. LeMahieu singled with one out, setting up Arenado's two-run shot.
LeMahieu found the bleachers in the fifth for another two-run shot and his third homer of the season.
In between, Cody Asche's second-inning liner back up the middle missed Lyles, but Colorado's starter re-aggravated a toe injury on the play and left the game. Cameron Rupp doubled home Asche two batters later to produce Philadelphia's only run.
Philadelphia threatened in the home seventh, loading the bases on a walk and two singles with no outs, but Brooks Brown replaced Rusin and struck out the side.
"That was the big play in the game, bases loaded with no outs," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg. "It was our best chance of the day, so that was a disappointing half of an inning for us."
Christian Friedrich tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning and Scott Oberg pitched around a two-out single in the ninth to nail down his first save.
Game Notes
Rockies left fielder Ben Paulsen left the game in the third inning with a headache. He had homered in each of the first two games of this series ... Arenado has 14 RBI in his last seven games ... Philadelphia is 1-for-27 with runners in scoring position over its last four games.
