Chen pitches Orioles past Phillies
Jun 16, 2015 - 3:18 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Wei-Yin Chen pitched eight scoreless innings and Matt Wieters hit a three-run homer to guide the red-hot Baltimore Orioles to a 4-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.Chen (3-4) was masterful, yielding just four hits and a walk while matching a season high with nine strikeouts. He picked up his second straight victory after five winless starts.
"He was strong tonight," said Wieters. "He went out there with a plan and he carried it out"
Wieters' long ball was his second since returning to the lineup after missing Baltimore's first 53 games following offseason Tommy John surgery. The Orioles are 8-2 since Wieters rejoined the lineup.
Aaron Harang (4-8) was responsible for all four runs on five hits over six innings for the Phillies, who have been the worst road team in the majors this season.
They fell to 0-7 on an eight-game road trip and dropped to 7-27 away from home on the season. No other major league team has less than 10 road wins.
"We're having trouble swinging the bats and getting things going," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg.
Harang kept Baltimore off the scoreboard until the fifth inning, when Travis Snider doubled with two outs and scored on J.J. Hardy's single up the middle. Cody Asche, Philadelphia's converted left fielder who spent the early portion of his career at third base, could have ended the inning but misplayed Snider's fly ball to left.
Jimmy Paredes singled and Chris Davis drew a two-out walk an inning later, setting up Wieters' blast to right.
Chen didn't allow more than one baserunner in any of his eight innings. Zach Britton came on and tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to end the game.
