Franco stars as Phillies outslug Yankees

Jun 23, 2015 - 4:07 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Maikel Franco had two homers and five RBI on a 4-for-5 night that helped the Philadelphia Phillies halt an epic road losing streak with an 11-8 victory over the New York Yankees.

Philadelphia entered the opener of this three-game interleague series having dropped 12 straight as the visitor, but rocked an ineffective Michael Pineda (8-4) for eight runs and 11 hits over 3 1/3 innings to pick up its first road win since May 23.

The Phillies pounded out 18 hits in all in their highest scoring output of the season. Cesar Hernandez finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored, Ryan Howard contributed a two-run single and Ben Revere and Freddy Galvis each had three hits while crossing the plate twice.

Philadelphia starter Kevin Correia fared only marginally better than Pineda, surrendering five runs and eight hits in four innings. Jake Diekman (2-1) tossed two scoreless frames of relief, however, to earn the win.

The Yankees dropped their second straight despite a 4-for-4 effort by Brett Gardner that included a three-run homer. Brian McCann added a solo shot and drove in two runs, while Carlos Beltran went 3-for-5 with an RBI double.

Pineda took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in a dominant performance against Miami his last time out, but clearly didn't have it on this night. Franco belted a hanging slider into the left-field seats in the top of the first, and the Phillies teed off on the right-hander in both the third and fourth to erase a 2-1 deficit.

After Philadelphia loaded the bases with no one out on singles by Revere and Franco around a walk to Hernandez, Howard ripped a base hit up the middle to knock in a pair of runs. Pineda then got Dominic Brown to bounce into a double play, but Franco came home for a 4-2 Phillies' advantage.

Hernandez stepped to the plate with the sacks full in the fourth and delivered as well, scorching a double to deep right that plated Cameron Rupp and Cody Asche. Franco followed with a single on Pineda's final pitch that brought in two more and increased the lead to 8-2.

"You've got to make good pitches every time you go out, that's the bottom line. Tonight he just didn't," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Pineda.

Correia briefly let the Yankees back in the game, however, with a shaky fourth inning of his own. Chris Young and Stephen Drew each reached on two-out singles before Gardner cracked his third homer in five games to bring New York within 8-5.

The Yankees threatened to close the gap further when Beltran doubled Alex Rodriguez to third with one down in the fifth, but Diekman got out of the jam by getting Garrett Jones to foul out and fanning Didi Gregorius.

A half-inning later, Franco knocked a 3-0 pitch from Chris Capuano over the wall in left with Hernandez aboard to achieve his first career multi-homer game.

"He's been our most consistent and productive hitter on a daily basis with driving the ball and stinging it," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said of Franco.

McCann homered in the seventh to cut the lead to 10-6, then the Yankees scored twice in the ninth after Philadelphia tacked on one final run when Galvis doubled in the top of the inning and came around on a Revere single.

Rodriguez doubled and Beltran singled off Jonathan Papelbon before Garrett Jones sent home both with a double that trimmed the margin to 11-8. Papelbon then retired the next two batters to close out the high-scoring affair.

New York had grabbed a 2-1 edge with help from singles from Gardner and Chase Headley that opened the bottom of the second. McCann tied the game with a sacrifice fly and Beltran brought in Headley with a double.

Game Notes

The Phillies had mustered just 22 runs total over the course of their road skid ... Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira sat out a second straight game due to a stiff neck ... Franco has gone 11-for-18 over Philadelphia's last four games ... New York reliever Diego Moreno made his major league debut and threw a scoreless seventh inning ... The teams were meeting for the first time since the Phillies took two of three games at Yankee Stadium in 2010.
