Correa, Valbuena lead Astros in rout of Angels
Jun 24, 2015 - 5:48 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Carlos Correa continued a torrid start to his career while Luis Valbuena went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI in leading the Astros to a 13-3 drubbing of the Angels on Tuesday.Correa went 3-for-6 with three runs scored, a home run and four RBI, while Evan Gattis drove in a pair for the Astros, who saw Collin McHugh (8-3) toss eight innings of solid ball.
"I was able to move around the zone today. I was more aggressive," McHugh said. "It felt as easy today as it's felt in awhile."
C.J. Wilson (5-6) did not make it past the fourth after surrendering seven runs on eight hits. The left-hander had allowed one earned run over his previous two starts, but the division leaders caused a bit of a regression.
"The mistakes (Wilson) made went a long way," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.
Houston scored first for the 10th straight game when Correa came around on Gattis' double in the first inning, and the rookie shortstop crushed his fourth home run in his 15th career game -- a three-run blast halfway up the left-field seats -- an inning later.
Valbuena led off the fourth with his 18th home run of the season, and two more runs later in the inning, one on a Gattis sacrifice fly and another on a Cam Bedrosian wild pitch, made it a 7-0 game.
Efren Navarro got the Angels on the board with a two-run single in the bottom half, but the Astros poured it on from there.
Valbuena took Bedrosian deep to right in the fifth, Domingo Santana's double followed by an error provided two more runs in the sixth, and Correa capped his four-RBI night with a run-scoring fielder's choice in the ninth.
Navarro scored on a Johnny Giavotella double in the ninth to account for the final score.
Game Notes
The Astros have gone deep at least twice in nine of their last 10 games ... Three of Valbuena's four career multi-home run games have come this year ... Houston recorded 16 hits to the Angels' 11 ... McHugh was charged with two runs on nine hits. He walked one and struck out six ... Houston's Lance McCullers will square off against Matt Shoemaker in the rubber match of the three-game series on Wednesday afternoon.
