Frias, Dodgers shut down Cubs
Jun 25, 2015 - 11:39 PM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Carlos Frias threw five scoreless innings to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 4-0 win over the Chicago Cubs and split of a four-game series.Frias (5-5) ended a four-start winless streak with five strikeouts and seven hits and three walks allowed in his five frames. The Dodgers used four relievers to throw an inning apiece to keep Chicago off the board.
Howie Kendrick's two-run double put Los Angeles up in the first, and Jimmy Rollins had a pair of hits and run scored.
Jon Lester (4-4) stumbled through four innings for the Cubs, allowing all four Dodgers runs on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts.
"Early on, he was struggling with his command and we didn't really give in," said Kendrick.
Lester, who is 0-3 over his last six starts, was in immediate trouble. Rollins bunted for a single with one out, and the ace lefty walked consecutive batters to load the bases. Kendrick then delivered with a hard double down the right- field line to score two runs. Lester struck out the next two to get out of the inning, but enough damage was already done.
"Physically, I felt fine," said Lester. "Obviously, I didn't have very good location today."
The Cubs could not get anything out of a two-on, two-out opportunity in their half of the first, and Los Angeles went right back to work in the second. Frias was on first after he could not advance a runner on a sacrifice bunt, and Kike Hernandez tripled over Chris Denorfia's head in center field to score the pitcher. Rollins then picked up his second hit of the day with an RBI single to make it a 4-0 game.
Chris Coghlan tried scoring from second on Miguel Montero's two-out hit in the fourth, but Alex Guerrero cut him down at home plate with a strong throw from left field to keep Chicago off the board. An inning later, Frias struck out back-to-back batters with two runners in scoring position and one out to escape another jam.
Over the final four innings against the Dodgers' bullpen, only one Cub was able to reach base when Denorfia doubled with two outs in the seventh, Kenley Jansen pitched for the third straight game in the series and wrapped up the game with a 1-2-3 ninth.
