Martinez's HR in 8th lifts Tigers over White Sox

Martinez's go-ahead leadoff homer in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Detroit Tigers to a 5-4 win over the Chicago White Sox in the second of a four-game set.Martinez began the Tigers' half of the eighth by launching a 1-0 fastball from Zach Duke (3-3) into the seats in left-center.
The White Sox put runners on the corners with one out in the ninth. Joakim Soria, however, got Carlos Sanchez to pop out on a bunt attempt and induced a game-ending forceout off the bat of Adam Eaton to record his 17th save of the season.
"We gave him the option to do it, but he picked the wrong pitch," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said of Sanchez's bunt attempt.
Martinez, who hit his 10th homer in his past 16 games, finished with two hits and a pair of runs scored.
"He's getting his load and his foot down early," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said of Martinez. "That was a big one tonight."
Miguel Cabrera hit three doubles with an RBI and Rajai Davis smacked a solo homer for the Tigers, who have won four of their last six games on the heels of a four-game losing streak.
Bruce Rondon (1-0) fired a scoreless top of the eighth to notch the win.
Eaton, Tyler Flowers and Jose Abreu cracked solo homers for Chicago, which had won four of its last six contests coming in.
Eaton's leadoff shot to right opened the scoring in the first, but Cabrera's RBI double in the home half tied the game at 1-1.
Abreu's two-out blast to left-center in the third made it 2-1 in favor of Chicago, but the Tigers plated a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to go in front. Jose Iglesias' RBI base hit in the fourth and Yoenis Cespedes' RBI triple in the fifth gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead.
Melky Cabrera's run-scoring triple in the sixth and Flowers' leadoff homer in the seventh put the White Sox back in front by a 4-3 score.
Davis' leadoff shot to left in the home half of the seventh knotted the contest at 4-4.
Game Notes
Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez allowed four runs on six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over seven innings, while White Sox starter Jose Quintana gave up three runs on 11 hits over six frames ... Martinez's homer was his 19th of the year ... Detroit was 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
