Amazin' Matz: Mets down Reds behind rookie's debut

Jun 29, 2015 - 4:10 AM Flushing, NY ( - Steven Matz got his heralded prospect status because of his arm, but it was his bat that stole the show on Sunday.

Matz went 3-for-3 with four RBI while winning his MLB debut as the New York Mets dispatched the Cincinnati Reds 7-2 in the series finale at Citi Field.

He also was excellent on the mound for the Mets, who swept the Reds after a 13-inning win earlier in the day that completed Saturday's rain-shortened contest.

Matz (1-0), who became the first pitcher in MLB history to record four RBI in his debut, gave up two runs -- solo homers to Brandon Phillips and Todd Frazier -- with six strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings of work.

"I wasn't sure what to expect," said Matz. "I just tried to go out there and win the game."

Curtis Granderson added two RBI in the win.

Josh Smith (0-1), who took a no-decision in his major league debut earlier this week, was charged with three runs -- one earned -- in five innings.

"We have to play better on the road," said Reds manager Bryan Price.

Phillips gave Matz a memory he would likely want to forget, opening the game off the 24-year-old with his fifth homer of the season.

Darrell Ceciliani reached on an error by Cincinnati shortstop Eugenio Suarez to begin the second and the Reds elected to walk Eric Campbell in front of Matz, who roped a double center that plated a pair.

Frazier then tied the game by opening the fourth with his 25th homer of the season.

Granderson's double gave New York back the lead in the fifth, then Matz struck again as part of a three-run sixth.

John Mayberry Jr. and Johnny Monell singled, then the Mets loaded the bases after Campbell was plunked by Pedro Villarreal. Matz followed by lining a single into center that plated Mayberry and Monell for a 5-2 lead.

The Mets tacked on another run on Phillips' error that would have ended the inning.

Granderson stroked a two-out single in the eighth that scored Michael Cuddyer and Hansel Robles got the final two outs to give Matz his first career win.
