Schoop HR in return from disabled list, O's beat White Sox
Jul 5, 2015 - 11:00 PM CHICAGO (AP) Back in the majors, Jonathan Schoop quickly made an impact. The Baltimore second baseman homered in his first at-bat since coming off the 60-day disabled list, connecting on the second pitch he saw Sunday as the Orioles routed the Chicago White Sox 9-1.
''As soon as it left the bat, I said, `Really?''' Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.
Schoop was activated from the DL before the game after being sidelined by a sprained right knee since April 18. The homer was his first in the majors since April 15.
''The nerves were all there,'' Schoop said. ''I was a little bit excited, but I feel really good.''
Adam Jones had two doubles, Steve Pearce had three hits and Miguel Gonzalez threw six solid innings. The Orioles snapped a three-game losing streak after they had scored six runs in their previous four games combined.
The White Sox committed four errors and saw their four-game winning streak end. Chicago was trying to sweep the Orioles for the first time since 2005.
Gonzalez (7-5) allowed four hits, struck out three and walked one.
''It gives you confidence and you have more room to work with,'' Gonzalez said about the run support. ''We did a good job hitting, and our defense was great.''
The Orioles scored four runs as the White Sox made two errors in the seventh. Chris Davis and Pearce hit RBI singles before the Orioles loaded the bases on reliever Dan Jennings' wild throw to second.
A run scored when second baseman Carlos Sanchez misplayed a potential double-play grounder, and another run scored on a groundout.
''Let's face it, they helped us a lot today and normally they wouldn't,'' Showalter said. ''We were fortunate to take advantage of it.''
The Orioles went ahead in the first after two errors on the same play. Third baseman Conor Gillaspie fumbled the ball and made a wild throw on Nolan Reimold's grounder and Jones snapped a 0-for-11 slump with an RBI double.
Caleb Joseph hit a two-run double in the sixth off Daniel Webb.
Davis was robbed of a home run for the second straight game. J.B. Shuck caught his long flyball at the wall in left field in the eighth. A run scored on the sacrifice fly.
Avisail Garcia caught a drive by Davis in right field in the ninth Saturday.
''Both plays were big plays,'' said Davis, who waved a towel after the catch Sunday. ''The one (Saturday) was a little bit harder to swallow just because it would have tied the game. Today, with the big lead and runner on third, less than two outs, it was a little bit easier to digest.''
Melky Cabrera hit an RBI double in the Chicago sixth but was thrown out trying to extend it to a triple. Carlos Rodon (3-2) allowed four runs, three earned, in five innings.
''We did not play very well,'' White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. ''You have to put it behind you. Defensively, you can go down the list.''
