Rockies double up Dodgers in twinbill opener
Jun 3, 2015 - 2:48 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael McKenry went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBI as Colorado downed Los Angeles 6-3 in the opener of a doubleheader on Tuesday.Ben Paulsen also went deep among his two hits and scored twice for the Rockies, while Nolan Arenado went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Jorge De La Rosa (2-2) struck out six and walked four, giving up three runs on four hits over his six-inning outing. John Axford picked up his 10th save with a scoreless ninth.
"He gave us an opportunity to win and pitched a great ballgame -- quality start. That was huge for us and huge for him," McKenry said of his starter.
Joc Pederson slugged a two-run shot for the Dodgers, and Adrian Gonzalez accounted for their other run on a bases-loaded walk.
Ian Thomas (0-1) was tagged in the loss for four runs on five hits and two walks over three relief innings.
"We didn't do nearly enough to deserve to win," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said.
Gonzalez walked with the bases loaded to force in Thomas and forge a 3-3 deadlock in the fifth, then the Rockies struck back and took the lead for good with two in the bottom half on an RBI hit from Arenado and McKenry's double.
Paulsen added a solo homer in the seventh and the hosts were up by three.
Boone Logan turned the Dodgers away in order in the top of the seventh and recorded the first two outs in the eighth. Rafael Betancourt grounded out Howie Kendrick to end the frame.
Axford allowed a single to Justin Turner and then pinch-hitter Andre Ethier hit a grounder to short with Daniel Descalso's throw to second coming late after bobbling the ball. Upon replay, the call was reversed. Yasmani Grandal then fanned looking to wrap up the game.
Descalso put the Rockies on the board when he singled home Arenado in the home second, then Austin Barnes walked to start the third and scored on Pederson's mammoth two-run blast to right-center.
Colorado assumed a 3-2 edge in the home fourth as Paulsen doubled and scored when McKenry reached the seats in center.
"I swung at a bad pitch earlier in the count, and I was just telling myself to slow down," McKenry said. "A curveball was left up, and I was able to drive it. I was very fortunate."
