Rangers get revenge, pound Halladay
May 6, 2007 - 5:58 AM ARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) -- Michael Young made sure the Texas Rangers did not go silently against Roy Halladay this time around.Young went 3-for-5 with five RBI and the Texas Rangers roughed up Halladay in an 11-4 thrashing of the Toronto Blue Jays in the second of a three-game series on Saturday night.
Young has come alive by going 6-for-9 in his last two games after suffering through an 0-for-13 slump.
"Halladay's always extremely tough," Young said. "We had to chip away against him. There's only so much you can do against him. We just had some good at-bats."
Young's re-emergence came at a bad time for Halladay, who hurled a complete game against the Rangers on Monday, allowing just one run and five hits in a 6-1 win.
Five days later Young and the Rangers got revenge by pounding Halladay (4-1) for six runs in the third - his worst inning in five years. Texas has taken the first two games of the series by outscoring the Blue Jays, 18-5.
Not coincidentally, Halladay's previous worst inning came in the same ballpark. The righthander allowed seven runs in the fifth inning against the Rangers on June 28, 2002. Halladay has struggled in Texas, posting a 3-2 record with a 6.10 ERA - his worst in any ballpark - in eight starts. Overall, the Blue Jays have lost 15 of their last 18 games in Texas.
"I couldn't tell you, it's not something you can think about," Halladay said regarding his - and the Blue Jays' - struggles in Texas. "If anything, it's about the guys they have in their lineup, just if they got hot, it's a tough team to face."
The 29-year-old allowed a season-high nine runs and 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season.
"I didn't make pitches," Halladay said. "When you don't execute pitches, that's going to happen."
Trailing, 1-0, Texas recorded five straight hits off the former Cy Young Award winner and sent 11 batters to the plate to take a 6-1 lead.
After Kenny Lofton tied the game at 1-1 with a one-out single, Young followed with a two-run double down the third base line that was misplayed by Troy Glaus. The ball rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Matt Kata and Gerald Laird to score for a 3-1 lead.
Mark Teixeira and Hank Blalock each had RBI singles and Brad Wilkerson followed with a run-scoring double own the right field line for a 6-1 lead.
Young then added to his huge night with his third homer of the season, a two-run shot in the eighth off converted reliever Josh Towers.
"We swung the bats well against Doc Halladay," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "He threw some pitches in bad spots and we didn't miss them. He relies on his sinker and breaking ball and he left a few up and over the plate. It goes to show there's no perfection in baseball. "I'm happy to see us swing the bats and get some hits. That's been the forte here, to hit up and down the lineup. I've seen it before; maybe our luck is changing."
Lyle Overbay hit his third homer of the year - a two-run shot in the ninth - for the Blue Jays, who are 0-5 on their six-game road trip.
Vicente Padilla (1-4) benefited from the unlikely outburst to win his first game of the year. Padilla allowed two runs - one earned - and six hits in seven innings.
Padilla was glad to see the big inning as he has seen hit teammates score just over two runs a game in his starts, the second fewest in the American League.
"I was more relaxed today," Padilla said through an interpreter. "Today was a much better day for me. The team backed me up at the plate."
