Roberts, Markakis move hot Orioles past Angels

Jun 1, 2007 - 6:49 AM ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- The goal of a great leadoff hitter is to get on base multiple times in a game, something Brian Roberts has become very familiar with lately.

Roberts had three hits and Nick Markakis added a two-run double in the pivotal fifth inning as the Baltimore Orioles posted a 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Thursday.

Roberts, who has reached base at least twice in each of the last six contests, also scored twice, including the first, in which he led off the game with the first of three singles off Angels starter Kelvim Escobar (6-3). He crossed the plate three batters later on a groundout by Miguel Tejada.

"I know that my job is to get on base," Roberts said. "Just try to reach base anyway and have the guys behind me do their job hitting me in."

The 29-year-old switch hitter later recorded an RBI with his second single in the fifth before scoring again one batter later, staking Baltimore to a 2-1 lead.

"He (Roberts) has done a great job for us since his surgery and he's so important to our club," Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo said.

Markakis capped off a three-run inning with a two-run double to push Baltimore's advantage out to 4-1.

"Right now we are getting good pitching and playing good baseball," Markakis said. "Our bats are finally coming around and were putting runs on the board."

Anaheim narrowed the lead to 4-2 in the seventh as Vladimir Guerrero singled to center to score Chone Figgins. However, Baltimore answered with one run apiece in the eighth and ninth, including a sacrifice fly by Markakis to give him his third RBI and the Orioles their final run.

Brian Burres (3-2) worked five frames for his second consecutive win, allowing one run and three hits with three walks and three strikeouts for Baltimore, which won their sixth straight game. This streak is the longest winning streak the team has enjoyed since winning eight straight from April 22-May 1, 2005.

"He's not overpowering, he just gets the job done," Orioles catcher Ramon Hernandez said. "He got quick outs and threw early strikes and made big pitches when he needed to."

Escobar, who lost for only the second time in his last seven outings, surrendered five runs and eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts over eight innings. Roberts' first-inning run broke a 21-inning scoreless streak by the righthander.

"I felt good but it seemed like I just couldn't get an easy inning," Escobar said. "They have a good lineup and right now they are playing good baseball."

Guerrero had two RBI and Figgins had three hits for the Angels, who lost for only the second time in nine home games and fell to 19-8 at Angel Stadium.

"We can't win every game, but we are playing consistent baseball and winning games," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Just have to put this one behind us and get ready for tomorrow."
