Surging Orioles to face West's best
May 31, 2007 - 2:33 PM Baltimore (26-27) at LA Angels (33-21) 10:05 pm EDTANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- The Baltimore Orioles and their patchwork starting rotation are beginning to turn heads in the American League.
The Orioles will take their show out west this weekend, visiting the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for a four-game series beginning on Thursday.
With Adam Loewen and Jaret Wright on the shelf with injuries, Jeremy Guthrie and Brian Burres have moved into the rotation and are mowing down hitters. The two converted relievers are a combined 4-2 in nine starts and are a big reason why Baltimore has won five games in a row to pull within two games of .500.
Burres (2-2, 3.27 ERA) takes his turn in the rotation on Thursday looking to build upon his six-inning, one-run outing Saturday against Oakland. The 26-year-old lefthander earned the win against the Athletics and notched his third straight start allowing two runs or fewer.
Burres' win against the A's began the Orioles' recent streak.
The Angels, winners of five of their last six, will counter with Kelvim Escobar (6-2, 2.64). The veteran righthander has won his last two starts, yielding one run in 15 combined innings.
Escobar has been strong against Baltimore in his career, owning a 12-4 mark with a 3.76 ERA in 33 career appearances - 17 starts.
