Rookie Young delivers to lift Devil Rays over Blue Jays
Jun 7, 2007 - 8:52 PM TORONTO (Ticker) -- Tampa Bay Devil Rays rookie Delmon Young delivered a two-out, bases-loaded single in the top of the ninth inning to give his team a 5-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. It was just the second time the Devil Rays won a series on the road this season.
Young, who had two hits on the day, laced a single to centerfield off Toronto reliever Jeremy Accardo (1-1), scoring Carl Crawford and Carlos Pena to break a 3-3 deadlock.
"I didn't know where the ball was until I looked up (from first)," Young said. "I knew the game was going to be over, knowing (Al) Reyes was coming into the game."
Toronto starter A.J. Burnett pitched seven innings, striking out a season-best 13 hitters, including the last four he faced.
The righthander allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks while throwing a season-high 130 pitches. It is the sixth straight outing in which the oft-injured starter has topped the 100-pitch mark.
"I felt good. I look at it as I made two mistakes and they scored two runs in the (third) inning," Burnett said.
Righthanded reliever Gary Glover (3-2) picked up the win by pitching a scoreless eighth inning. Reyes fired a perfect ninth to earn his 15th save in as many tries this season.
Crawford capped off a brilliant series against the Blue Jays. The speedy outfielder had three hits and stole a base Thursday, finishing the series by hitting .500 (8-for-16) with three doubles and a home run.
"It seems like things have been going well, hopefully we can keep it up," Crawford said.
Tampa Bay opened the scoring by plating a pair in the third inning. The first run came on Brendan Harris' fifth homer of the season, and later an infield single by Ty Wigginton scored Crawford.
The Blue Jays got a run back in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout by rookie Adam Lind, scoring Frank Thomas.
Greg Norton put the Devil Rays ahead 3-1 in the fifth, doubling home Crawford who led off the frame with a walk.
Alex Rios knotted the score at 3-3 with a two-run shot in the fifth, scoring Jason Phillips who led off the inning with a walk.
"We came back and tied it, we thought we had a chance, we felt good all day long, it didn't happen," Blue Jays' manager John Gibbons said. "We just didn't score enough."
Troy Glaus added a pair of hits for Toronto.
Tampa Bay starter Edwin Jackson remained winless, but turned in one of his best outings of the season. The 23-year-old righthander allowed three runs on four hits and three walks and struck out six before departing after six innings.
"It seems like it's been that way for the year," Jackson said. "I'm just trying to keep it on a roll, not get too low or too comfortable, and feel like every start is my last one."
Relievers Shawn Camp pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Devil Rays.
