Jackson tries to earn first win for Devil Rays

Jun 7, 2007 - 1:52 PM Tampa Bay (25-32) at Toronto (28-30) 12:37 pm EDT

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are in the midst of a full-fledged youth movement both on the field and within the pitching staff.

With the recent call-ups of J.P. Howell and Andy Sonnanstine, all five of the Devil Rays starters are 25 or under. A 23-year-old, Edwin Jackson, takes his turn in the rotation on Thursday when Tampa Bay visits the Toronto Blue Jays in the rubber game of their three-game series.

Jackson (0-7, 7.77 ERA) has been enduring some growing pains so far this season. Even at just 23, Jackson is the veteran of the staff, having made his big-league debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2003 at the age of 19.

He pitched mostly out of the bullpen for the Devil Rays last season, struggling to a 5.45 ERA in 23 appearances. Now in his fifth season, Jackson's time may be running out to prove himself as a major leaguer. He allowed four runs in six innings but did not factor in the decision against Toronto on May 12.

Tampa Bay has clubbed 30 hits in the first two games of the series. The Devil Rays had 13 in a 6-2 win on Thursday, with Carl Crawford finishing with two and four RBI.

The Blue Jays' A.J. Burnett (5-5, 4.02) will be charged with stopping the surging Devil Rays' hitters. The 30-year-old righthander has lost each of his last two starts, but dominated Tampa Bay on May 11, holding them to one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings to earn a win.

Burnett will have to figure out a way to slow down Crawford, who has seven RBI in the first two games of the series.
